Tunes The Beatles MIGHT Have Done (Covered)

Even though they had an album with the name “soul” as part of its title, The Fabs never really got into the “Memphis Soul Scene”, although IMO, they might have given it a very good interpretation had they not disbanded.

I like to listen to a program called “American Roots” on my local Georgia Broadcasting Station out of Savannah (the program airs out of New Orleans), and heard the song I’m inluding as a link.

Please give it a chance, listen through it and see if you can’t hear McCartney singing the lead inbetween the chants. His bass and Ringo’s playing just “time” along with Harrison’s lead and Lennon’s rhythm?

Whatcha think, y’all, and would you like to add some of your own?

Thanks, and I hope you’ll be specific with either the pros or the cons.

Michael Buble’s “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet” sound’s just like a Beatles song at times, particularly the outro. If the Beatles covered it, they probably wouldn’t do it with as much bounce, but it would certainly fit the catalog.

For the longest time, I thought The Kinks’ “A Well Respected Man” was a Beatles tune.

I don’t know about the “Memphis” part. They would have loved to have been able to produce the quality of music that came out of the Stax scene but they just weren’t good enough musicians.

Yeah - I like Billy Preston just fine, but he’s no Booker T.

Come Together and Get Back were definitely nods in the Memphis Soul direction. The fab 4 wouldn’t have had the talent to make it in that scene.

Me too, I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Nitpick: It’s actually “American Routes”. (I also thought it was “Roots” at first.) Excellent show.

Of course there’s Badfinger, who had a direct connection to the Fab Four (their first albums were released on Apple and sometimes produced by McCartney). Here’s “Come and Get it”, written by Paul and basically sounding like a “Rubber Soul” outtake. Two more examples of their early Beatles-like songs they penned themselves:

“Baby Blue”

“Day after Day”

The whole Power Pop genre with other bands like Big Star, the Raspberries, and later Teenage Fanclub et al. was heavily influenced by the Beatles, but Badfinger came the closest.
