turf toe remedies

The Lions Jarved Best is suffering from turf toe on both feet. It has harmed his quickness. Why can’t they just pain kill it with freezing or drugs? It just does not seem like it should be that big a problem.

When you run, you push off the big toe. Turf toe damages the ligaments and hinders function. Freezing or pain control won’t return function.

So what is the fix? Will it come back if Best rests during the off season?

There’s no real fix. I had this a couple of years ago. I bent my left big toe completely under my foot. It was excruciating, and hobbled me for months. I still feel it occasionally. It’s essentially a ligament strain or tear, and since the big toe is of absolutely paramount importance in the ability to cut or accelerate, it’s really a remarkably devastating injury. Just numbing it up will not do anything to restore the abilities lost to it.

Dr. Pribut on turf toe.

How do you bend your toe up, if you are wearing shoes?

Shoes bend.

When a player cuts too sharply on artificial turf or is hit at just the wrong time, the joint is hyperextended.

I play a lot of racketball. it does not seem to be a problem for our sport, but we run on a hard surface and cut a lot.

Couldn’t they just call a toe truck?

Give someone an inch and they’ll take a foot.

Turf toe is probably the least respected, but still quite debilitating injuries in sports… With some bad cases it never really heals…

A good example of this is Deion Sanders… He missed a number of games with turf toe in his career and was always chastised for it… but now his big toe is completely deformed… When he was working for one of the pregame shows they had him participating in one of the segements when they leave the desk for the little mini field that the have in the studio… Marriucci (sp?) was giving him the business about how he was wearing a very very expensive suit but had a pair of what looked like payless loafers on… he mumbled something about his toe and Mooch asked him to show the camera his toe… he didn’t want to at first but eventually did… he foot was utterly mangled and this a few years after having finished playing…

anyone who thinks turf toe is not that bad of an injury probably has never had turf toe…
