I just saw a Philly Cream Cheese commercial (of all things) with an obvious interracial couple in it. Not just friends, it’s a couple making dinner with a little smooching at the end.
Any other examples? I was pretty surprised to see this, as I can’t think of any other ones I’ve seen recently.
An Old Navy commercial from a few years ago had an interracial couple and their mixed race baby opening gifts at Christmastime. That was the first one I ever rememeber seeing.
And I know I’ve seen a few others recently, but I couldn’t tell you what products they were selling.
I watch a lot of shows on HGTV - home buying, home selling, home organizing, home renovation, you name it. I don’t know if I notice interracial and gay couples more because they “stand out” or if they really do have more interracial and gay couples more often than your typical white hetero couples on their shows.
It does seem that every time I turn the channel on to mindlessly watch something, most of the time it’s an interracial or gay couple being featured. I dig it.
In the last few years of “Doctor Who”, there have been many traveling companions. One, Mickey Smith, was the boyfriend of Rose Tyler, before she became the 9th Doctor’s traveling companion. (Mickey later joined them for a couple of trips.) It was rather cool: a black/white couple, but they didn’t make a point of pointing it out; it just was.
After Rose got stuck in a parallel dimension, the 10th Doctor gained another companion, Martha Jones, a rather attractive black woman. As she travelled with the Doctor, she slowly started to have romantic feelings for him that weren’t reciprocated.
The two characters Mickey and Martha were part of two different story arcs initially. But they may have met tangentially during the last season’s final story arc.
Then in the final story for the 10th Doctor (David Tennant),
[spoiler]he becomes irradiated in the dénouement, triggering his regeneration. But he manages to keep it from progressing until he can go make a series of goodbyes to all of his friends he’s made in this (and the previous) regeneration.
At one stopover, he’s gone to an alternate Earth, which is being ravaged by Sontarans. And out of the blue, Mickey and Martha, the only black regular characters, are married and fighting the aliens. I guess they couldn’t write off these characters with the possibility that they hooked up with white characters. Nope, the two black characters hooked up, nice and neat.

This reminds me of a skit they had years ago on SNL where they came up with a commercial for toothpaste and it had this really long scene of Tim Meadows smooching a white woman. The execs got all jittery when they saw it, especially when they were told that it was going to be airing during the CMA Awards. At the end the producers of the commercial had their car blown up.
