I have this not new tv Sony Bravia 32 inch and the problem with it is that it is making a buzzing noise coming from the rear of the tv. The sound changes slightly when selecting different picture modes.
What is making that noise and can it be fixed easily?
Buzzing from an LCD TV is quite likely from a bad power supply or bad capacitors. If you are comfortable with electronics and soldering, it is fairly straightforward to locate bloated caps and replace them. If you are not, it is probably a $100 repair if you have TV repair shop near you. If the whole power supply board needs to be replaced, I would guess the repair could be over $200 (at a shop).
The above might not be specific to your model but unplugging your TV for a while or doing a factory reset if on is described in your manual has a chance of helping and wouldn’t take much effeort.
Not likely to help but its possible that the noise could be stopped or reduced by using a different outlet, taking another device off the same outlet, or adding a surge protector.
JKilez is likely right but I like to try the less expensive, easier fixes before going to expensive or more intensive.
I took the back cover off. Quuite surprised how few component there are. Anyway, non of the capacitors look bloated or giving any reaction from when tapping them. It sound like the the high pitched buzzing comes frrom one of the transformers on the center curciut board. The deep humming seems more to come from the left where there is a vertical row of 6-7 small coils with thick wirering. But then it might also come from the bad transformer that makes things vibrate in the chasis. I can solder, but where do I get a new transformer?
Removing a transformer is a bear. You either have to keep all the pins hot at the same time or totally clean off all the solder, which never comes all off. And they take a lot of heat too because they are big components. It’s not easy like removing a capacitor.
If the transformer is part of the power supply board, you could just replace the whole thing. On most TVs the power supply is on a separate board from the other circuitry and usually has 1-3 transformers, 2-4 coils, and 1-2 large capacitors. Replacing the board is easier, but more expensive than just replacing the failing component. That part is usually $50-$100 by itself (if you can find it).
Unfortunately it isn’t possible to post images here. But yes, there are four transformers, some various types of capasitors. It is the only board that I can see. It is 15x15cm.
The model is Sony Bravia kdl-32s4000.
Hi!
I found a board cheap on ebay. I switched the old board. Well, allthrough the seller sad it didn’t make any buzzing noise, it does. But not as much as the old one. So not much have changed. Only that when on pc mode and the backlight is set to max, the humming is gone.
Would it be possible to “brace” the components to stop them vibrating? Possibly by applying hot melt glue spotted on between the component and board? Maybe someone could advise if this is a good strategy because of heat generated etc but I’ve seen it on some boards.
