TV Mechanics Named Cooter

Another thread titled “Cooter Brown” made me think about all the Cooter’s I’ve known. I could come up with only two, and they were both mechanics on TV shows (assuming I am remembering things correctly, which is not all that likely  ).

Wasn’t that the name of the mechanic on both the Andy Griffith Show and on the Dukes of Hazard?

Now that I have thought about it further, didn’t they look quite a bit alike (or is it just me)?

Aren’t you confusing “Cooter” with “Goober” in the case of “The Andy Griffith Show”?

DOH!!!

Nevermind everyone.

<mumbling to self> Goober… Cooter… same thing…

You were right about the Dukes of Hazard, though. See Cooter’s Place

And, oddley enough, Ben “Cooter” Jones of the Dukes of Hazzard ran for Congress, against Newt GIngrich (unsuccessfully).

Can you imagine Gopher from the Love Boat and Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard and Pa Walton in the same COngress? It nearly happened!

Um, Ben Jones was a congressman. He served 3-4 terms, IIRC.

Yes, Ben Jones was a congressman. He tried in 1986 and lost. Then he won in 1988 and 1990. Then they redrew the congressional districts in Georgia, as per the 1990 Census data, and he lost against his new opponent. Jones then ran again against Gingrich in 1994; he lost again.

Jones and Fred “Gopher” Grandy did serve in Congress together, from 1989-1993. Grandy had better luck; he ran in 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992, and won all 4 times.

Must be something about “Cooter” and politics–I see that Pat Buchanon’s lawyer in the case in Virginia (demanding the other guy not campaign under the Reform Party name) is Cooter. Well, Dale Cooter, but Cooter nonetheless.

This probably says too much about my background, but I actually knew a mechanic named Critter.

I can top that. In West Virginia I knew a mechanic named “Pig.”
