He was working in television from its very beginning.
Ah, yes, master of the expository theme song.
Sherwood Schwartz: “It’s a microcosm!”
TV exec: “I thought this was supposed to be a funny show.”
Sherwood Schwartz: “It’s a funny microcosm!”
He’s on a three-hour tour of heaven.
Thanks, Sherwin.
A real visionary. Two of his shows are so deeply embedded in the american psyche as to never be unraveled. Thanks for hours of fun in front of the TV after school, Sherwood.
I predict his grave will be covered in Astroturf.
RIP, Sherwood. You made great shows for me to watch after school when I was 7.
Thanks for the great shows and great memories, Sherwood. May the Schwartz be with you.
I was amazed he was still alive!
He certainly was the right man at the right time. Ridiculous, high-concept (not to be confused with high-brow) comedy filled with arch-stereotypes! Grew up on his stuff (in syndication anyway!)
And I always loved how totally without pretension he was. He knew he wasn’t making art, nothing of the kind. He was making pure escapist entertainment! And Tina Louise has no one to blame but herself!
So long, Sherwood! Thanks for the laughs. You had a great run, 94 ain’t too shabby.

Wow, what a loss. He pretty much invented television.
I’m actually surprised this thread has so few hits/replies. Lack of name recognition? Am I that old? The above comment about him practically inventing television is spot on. Not that there weren’t a host of other pioneers, but his contribution is profound.
It’s the story
of man named sherwood
who created two sitcoms for us all…
I can’t do it…
RIP…
But I will leave this:
On their best days, MFK: Mary Ann, Ginger, Marcia ?
To quote critter42, over in the Deathpool
Another giant gone. RIP, Sherwood.
I wonder if there was a casting couch?
Now, he created two other sitcoms. I’ve talked to a few people who remember Dusty’s Trail, but am I the only person who remembers It’s About Time? Astronauts & Dinosaurs! How could that have only lasted one season?
Two words: Imogene Coca.
LOL
I must be as old as you because I remember that show, and the rhyme we had in school:
It’s about time, It’s about space;
It’s about time I slapped your face…:smack:
If only he had cast Raquel Welch as Mary Ann as the “E True Hollywood Story” says almost happened.
Meanwhile Newton N. Minow, the man whose scathing "vast wasteland"speech that caused Schwartz to name the ship after him, is still alive at 85.
I’m the opposite. I remember It’s About Time very well but have only a vague recollection of Dusty’s Trail.
