TV Trivia Mega-Quiz

I’m not quite sure what you’re going for, so let’s review a bunch of interrelated factors, and you can tell me which of them fits:

*The development of videotape and increasing use of film replacing live drama
*The move of most production to Los Angeles and change in mindset
*The growth of ratings-oriented “magazine style” sponsorship and decline of single-sponsor “prestige” programming
*The quiz show scandals and subsequent move by the networks to have more direct control of programming
*The deal between Warner Brothers and ABC which led to formulaic genre shows over anthology or repertory-based programs
Are any of those what you had in mind?

I believe two were Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts and Arthur Godfrey and Friends. Logical guess – the third was The Arthur Godfrey Hour.

Part of the last point is what I had in mind: the increased involvement of motion picture companies in the making of television programs.

Sternvogel: The first two listed are the two big ones. The real third program is a lot more peculiar (for a prime-time television program) than the one you guessed.

Both correct.

Here are my remaining questions:

The Odd Couple:

  1. Which regular has a sibling who made guest appearances on the show?
  2. Three football players had guest shots on the show. Deacon Jones played himself; which two did not play themselves?

Mary Tyler Moore:

  1. What is the name of Mary’s home town?
  2. What was the name of the game show Ted auditioned to host?

All in the Family:

  1. Joe Tucker told a story about Archie dropping a case of machine parts. What name did he call Archie after the incident?
  2. What was the name of the neighborhood mortician?
  3. Name 2 actors from “military” sitcoms who had recurring roles on the show.

Hill Street Blues:

  1. Who had a “Fatal Attraction” crush on Stan Jablonski?

  2. Which future Oscar nominee played the love interest of one of the detectives?

  3. What did Mick Belker’s father do for a living?

  4. I don’t recall exactly what happened to the DuMont archives, but I recall that Edie worked very hard to earn the money to buy out what survived of her husband’s (Ernie Kovacs) shows to preserve his legacy.

Next group:

Game Shows:

  1. Which Oscar winner’s father was a game show host, and what show did he host?
  2. Name two game show hosts who were brothers.
  3. What 1960’s game show host was the premier wrestling announcer in the 1950’s?
  4. Who was the original host of I’ve Got a Secret ?
  5. A famous game show announcer was also the “voice-over” for a 1970’s sitcom. Name the announcer and the sitcom.

Tom Kennedy and Jack Narz

Going from memory here.

Alan Melvin had a recurring role as Barney Hefner; and I seem to remember him in uniform with Gomer Pyle (or McHale’s Navy, or Sgt. Bilko, one of those).

Jennifer Tilly had an early role as the widow of a mobster (who died in one of their holding cells in the basement, presenting a challenge to get him back out) who flirted pretty openly with Henry. Was she nominated for Bound?

Rod Roddy (famous from The Price is Right), did the voice-overs at the end of each episode of Soap.

For some reason “Rosemont” just popped into my mind.

(probably because it sounds like “Rosebud!”)

  1. What 1960’s game show host was the premier wrestling announcer in the 1950’s?
    Dennis James
  1. If the answer’s Jim (Timothy’s father) Hutton, you’d be wrong: The host of Everything’s Relative was a Twin Cities TV personality of the same name, not the actor. (Citation available on request.)

  2. Garry Moore.

I had to cheat and look up the answer. According to Edie Adams, virtually all the DuMont archives were dumped in New York harbor.

Labdad , you are correct on 50, half right on 7.

Robot Arm is half right on 15 (it was Sgt. Bilko), correct on 18 (Bullets Over Broadway), and correct on 53.

5 time champ has 51 correct.

**Governor Quinn ** is correct on 52. On 49, I’m thinking of a much more recent Oscar winner.

So far, so good, Dopers! Keep 'em coming!

Nick Clooney (father of George) hosted The Money Maze. I happened to answer a question about that show in another recent thread.

You are correct, sir.

I was out of town for a week, so I’m going to post unanswered questions one last time for anyone who still wants to play:

Question 15 has been half answered (Allan Melvin from Sgt. Bilko is one of the actors). If no one answers or posts any new questions by Wednesday 4/9, I’ll post the answers.

I’m going to guess on #12 and say it’s “meathead”…

OK, I’ll assume the half that’s right is “Rose.” Roseburg? Rosetown? Roseville? Rose something!

Penny Marshall played Myrna Turner, and her brother is Garry Marshall.

  1. Laverne & Shirley: What was the name of the musical combo Lenny & Squiggy formed?
  2. Car 54, Where Are You?: Do you know the lyrics to the show’s theme song?
  3. Bosom Buddies: While the opening them played, what were the two main characters doing?
  4. Superman: What was the name of the police inspector who worked with Superman and The Daily Planet?
  5. Magnum, P. I.: What were the names of The Lads, and who were they?
  6. Name That Tune:What did you have to do when you recognized the title of a song?
  7. This Is Your Life: When Eddie Cantor was the guest on the show, he was, uniquely, told he was going to be “suprised.” Why was this?
  8. Name a movie star who substituted for Raymond Burr on an episode of ** Perry Mason.**
  9. What interrupted a televised Jets-Raiders game, at a critical point, ostensibly to stay on schedule?
  10. On an ** Oscar** program one year, what prompted host David Niven to quip that someone was showing “his shortcomings”?

Finally, one I can answer.

The Lads were Dobermans named Zeus and Apollo, and belonged (or at least were controlled by, Higgins.

Yay! Some of these are right in my wheelhouse!

  1. “There’s a holdup in the Bronx
    Brooklyn’s broken out in fights
There’s a traffic jam in Harlem
That’s backed up to Jackson Heights
    There’s a scout troop short a child
    Khrushchev’s due at Idlewild
    Car 54 where are you?”

  2. Inspector Bill Henderson

  3. You had to run down a lane, jump up, and ring a bell.
