TV Tropes has been hacked

This is an evil plan I can get behind.

It’s back up. I checked the forum and apparently it was the same guy again. No content was lost.

May I just say here that while I abhor hackers and crackers and jackers and stackers and shellackers and all the other -ackers, I’m not that wild about tvtropes.com. The trope-obsessed on “The Order of the Stick” constantly reference the tropes as the webcomic goes on, substituting pre-fabricated labels for actual analysis and comprehension of literature.

In terms of Bloom’s Taxonomy, regurgitating the name of the relevant trope is the lowest possible order of cognitive function. Every time I see someone reference a trope, I roll my eyes and say, “You memorized a list. Congratulations.”

So you know people who’ll do this for money? Or are you just bragging.

I see no brag, **Ivan **is asking a question.

If Hackers got file system access to a PC they could fairly easily replace all your music with anything else they felt like. It would be a couple of simple scripts. It is the gaining access and desire to be a complete douche that are the hard part.

There’s more to it than memorizing a list. You have to know where and when to correctly apply the trope.

Great, NDP. Still not impressed.

Like how ‘gay’ means ‘stupid’ now. Linguistic drift happens to us all, I guess.

What did Kathy Acker ever do to you?

Or how the anime/manga section is twice as long as every other section combined! I love TV Tropes, but they need to encourage more and varied users to contribute.

Or they need to get some editors who will go in and clean up some of the crap.

When people make major laws repressing the basic human rights of computer hobbyists, then that statement won’t be completely fucking retarded.

Too true. I must confess to being a troper, and on rare occasions when I do feel my example merits an entry, it will be under literature or webcomics.

My first instinct is to be offended. I haven’t posted over at the OOTS forums, but I do lurk there (Viva la lurkers!), and find myself doing the trope thing in my head. Some people, especially nerdy people, have a need to fit things into nice neat boxes. OOTS, for example, is based on the Dungeons and Dragons universe. This is a game that attempts to reduce complex issues of morality and ethics into a 9 cell table. So yeah.

I do see your point about how dropping a bunch of pot holes and trope names is not the same as having an actual discussion. But honestly, is it that widespread? I know there are some posters who do it frequently, but there are many more posters who do actually discuss the story elements of the strips. If it’s not Great Books level discussion, it’s because the content isn’t Great Books level.

Which has no bearing whatsoever on what he actually said. Amongst a certain rather sizeable portion of the young, they will say “That’s gay!” when they want to expresss that something is, in their opinion, stupid.

Offensive? Probably to some. Probably not to others.
Railing against languages makes you sound like someone complaining that “the Homosexuals” stole the perfectly good word gay.
