TV Tropes has been hacked

One of my favorite websites, tvtropes.org, is down because some fucking script kiddie couldn’t think of anything better to do with his time than to vandalize it.

Dear spunkmonkey, I hope someone takes your PC, opens it up and takes a shit right in it. Dickhead.

I seem to recall that the message board was hacked a few months ago, and they never really got a real board back up, just archives. Wonder if it’s the same asshole?

There was a security flaw in the message board so they dropped it. It doesn’t seem to be the same guy - the last one was pretending to be working for some group.

Anyone have any idea on how soon the site might be brought back up?

Fuckstick Cracker can’t actually delete the data, can he?

It looks like the site’s been taken down. I’m assuming the cracker didn’t do that, so it should be being worked on. Maybe. If he does delete everything, well, last time they managed to get almost everything back so…

I’ve always wanted to hear one of these little shitstains brag about something like this in front of me. Then I could punch his teeth out while yelling ‘You’re teeth should be free!’ or some other hacker slogan and not feel bad about it.

When I tried to get there last night there was some message from the l33t h@xx0r about how “You should get better security” (and some lame-ass skull and crossbones).

So when you punch his teeth out, you should yell something about how he should take boxing lessons, or at least wear a mouthguard.

Do a Google search for TVTropes and you can see what the moron put up in the Google cache link. (It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Nov 13, 2008 09:44:31 GMT)

It looks like it was just some little twit showing off. The should be able to get everything back to the last backup. I thought they mentioned improving their backups after the last disaster?

It appears to be back up again.

Yeah, I just went there and everything seems fine.

Bloody moron, all the same. (The hacker, not the OP.)

Cracker. Computer criminal. Immature douchebag. Not ‘hacker’. (Sorry. That one bugs me.)

Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown. And the word “hacker” means “one who accesses computers without permission”.

Dare to dream.

What if they got together with the virus writers?

I dream of a world where these people hold conventions. In this world, I am extremely rich and less ethical than I am in the world I currently inhabit.

A call goes out to bouncers, bikers, boxers, bar brawlers, martial artists, soldiers, skells, gangsters and goons. To any and all of those who can deliver quality bare handed violence. Decent pay, short term contract, full coverage of legal expenses and a generous monthly stipend if you wind up doing time.

The successful applicants receive convention badges, arm bands, and synchronized watches. They stroll around, marvel at the exploits, maybe buy some software, tape their hands, that kind of stuff. At 3:42 pm the watches beep, and they enter a five minute period during which they hit anyone not wearing an armband until he or she falls down, and then if no other convention goers are about spend the remaining time kicking and stomping those around them. When the 5 minutes is up, they get out of Dodge.

The next day, a press release about the importance of physical fitness and self defence is released.

It’d all be cool, because it was for the lulz, and we were raising awareness of personal security problems and stuff. I have every confidence that once they recovered the ability to speak the 1337 hax0rz would be… whatever the hell the website admins are supposed to be.

But “cracker” means someone who does so and breaks things.

Wonder how that moron would like it if someone hijacked his favorite high-level WoW character and made it commit suicide. He likes breaking other peoples’ toys so much, let him know what it feels like.

And fantastic news if they managed to fix the site!

As of now I can only see an IIS7 page - looks like what you’d get on first installation of a web server.

Well, I checked back and I get on the site fine.

So, worse case scenario. What could a malicious yet savvy ‘hacker’ do to an unwary pc user? Could they replace all your music files with donkey porn clips, for instance?

He’d probably make a corpse run, rez, then go get his gear repaired. In other words, he’d be mildly inconvenienced for about five minutes and lose a few silver in repair costs.

It is not appropriate to punch someone’s teeth out over this. Doing so risks cutting the fist and getting his blood mingled with yours, and since the assault is obviously premeditated, it behooves the assailant to be better prepared. If you MUST attack the victim’s mouth, there are metal rods available in the lobby gift shop.
