Well, failing finding a less-anal ad server to offset some of the costs…I’m dirt poor myself, but I can pledge $10 a month.
TvTropes calls those kind of people “entry pimps”, assuming that they haven’t blocked that article because somebody complainined that the site was promoting prostitution. (I used to be one for Battlestar Galactica and Atop the Fourth Wall before it got big.)
Yeah, that sounds less like the change in my truck and more like a decent chunk of disposable income.
Does HostGator include domain registration in that? At that price, they should..
Of course they do. They include multiple domains in that.
But yes, $2100 a year is a lot of money. But for a website with over 5,000,000 pageviews a month? Chump change. The fact that TV Tropes is even bitching about this is proof they don’t have the slightest clue how to handles ads other than signing up for Google AdSense.
Well, it sounds like you’re a hoopy frood who knows where his towel is. So assuming I’m insane enough to actually try and pull this off, are you interested in being a resource for advice?
The last website I set up was my own personal page and while I enjoy it, it wasn’t exactly a multi-user site. I need to find out what TVTropes runs on, because I like their wiki style.. and I can probably handle the tech stuff.. but ads? I’m certainly more clueless than they are. Never tried to monetize a site.
Ask away, but the only sites I’ve monetized are video game sites, and nothing approaching 5 million pageviews a month.
But TV Tropes runs on PMWiki: PmWiki | PmWiki / PmWiki
I’ll file that away. I need to do some thinking and some information gathering next..
It appears that Mind Rape and the other Rape Tropes are only temporarily filtered, according to http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Administrivia/TheSecondGoogleIncident?from=Main.TheSecondGoogleIncident
- so I’m going to wait and see…
The Sonic fetish may come from Chris Sonichu.
Eminently, or else there would be a corporation spending millions of speech on promoting paedophilia, right?
It’s funny, you can kind of “date” the age of a page, geology style, by which waves of fandom were active while it was up. First it was Buffy, then professional wrestling, then Haruhi Suzumiya (for the record, I did have to look that up), then Harry Potter, then Survival of the Fittest (a friggin’ forum game), ad infinitum…er, not necessarily in that order, but you get the idea.
Vinyl, Vinyl, Vinyl… he collects RINGS, not coins! Don’t confuse our beloved Sonic with that plumber again!
