yes, TVAA used to be “The VOrlorn Ambassador’s Aide” or something like that, got a lot of flack for his name being so long, and shortened it.

What seems to elude some people is the fact that yes, we’re about debate and discussion. But we’re also about the civilized use of debate and discussion. It is not necessary to behave in a rude, disruptive or hurtful manner to get one’s point across.

I don’t understand the “Jerk” rule.
On many occasions I see people acting likes jerks WHILE defending the jerk rule. I know the mods like that rule for its vagueness, but wow.
I don’t know TVAA but it looks like he got banned while making what he thought were valid arguments defending his position. If people choose to stay in a thread and battle it out, whats the problem?
For instance, his coldfire thread could’ve sank down the page with little notice if people didn’t bother to respond.

Hows about everyone takes a deep breath or five? It is very soothing.
Someone once explained to me that the “Don’t be a jerk” rule is ambiguous on purpose. It would be well-nigh impossible to give a hard and fast definition of what a “jerk” is, and what all the bannable offenses would be. If there was a specific rule about what a “jerk” is, then several jerks would try to find loopholes in order to avoid being banned.
Therefore, the powers-that-be came up with a rule that would govern the totality of a posters posts. I don’t think anyone has violated the jerk rule with just one post. Rather, a pattern of jerkiness and disrespect to other posters will result in a banning.

IANAModerator, but one of the policies of the board IIRC is that accusations of grievious violations of Board Rules (trolling and socking) be privately reported to the management, and not ventilated in the forums.
And BTW, people have been unbanned before, it’s not a death sentence. But heck, this is a private outfit. It has an owner (The Chicago Reader) and a management (Admins and Mods) whom the owner has authorized to make the rules and enforce them, and if we don’t like it we don’t have to be here.
Before this thread gets locked as sometimes happens when we have discussions of why so-and-so got banned I’d like to welcome Lib back. Bro, you’ve been known to piss me off but then so does everybody now and then.
