TVAA banned. Anyone know why?

TVAA’s been banned? What a pity.

Of course, by “pity”, I mean “AIDS patient’s used condom”.

Some are born banned, others achieve banning, still others have banning thrust upon them.

The rest jump up and down screaming, “Ban me! Ban me! I double dog dare you to ban me!”

And that’s the bottom line - if you really need clarification of the Prime Directive, read tanookie’s linked thread.

See what TVAA did? Don’t do that.

FWIW, IMO, the essence of “thou shalt not be a jerk” varies from forum to forum. In GD, it is pretty simple - no personal insults, no calling other posters “troll” or “sock puppet”, attack the post and not the poster. In GQ, Cafe Society, IMHO, MPSIMS, same, with the added caveat that in GQ you should post on subjects you don’t know anything about, and stick to factual answers.

The Pit is more subtle, but have a read thru Lynne Bodoni’s Pit Rules. Again FWIW, my experience is that flames work best if they are not taken entirely seriously, either as flamer or flamee. A certain light-heartedness works best, if only because it allows the objectivity to come up with truly witty and amusing flames. Everybody loses their temper from time to time. You avoid meltdown (and banning) by at least trying to retain some detachment from the process.

Of course, another offense against the rules is to play Junior Mod. Therefore, take this for what it is worth - which ain’t much.

Then how is it you’re still here?

And I thought he was banned for the Anne Frank thread! (in which he atempted to defend his position that all Orthodox Jews deserve to be hated because they are the moral equivilent of Nazi skinheads.)

He should be banned not (only) because he is an asshole who crosses the don’t-be-a-jerk line but because he trolls. I do not think that he is really an antisemitic bigot (for example); he just enjoyed taking offensive positions and baiting people.

I miss Coll and regret that he could not contain his temper and colorful style - he added intelligence, knowledge and a sincere POV, even if I usually disagreed with it; this dipwad’s only function was to provoke some intelligent responses to his bait.

(Emphasis mine)

Yeah - seems about par for the course there, doesn’t it? :stuck_out_tongue:

Dani

(Appologies for doing this to a typo - but I couldn’t resist it ;))

I’m not sure, but I think even making this accusation against a banned poster publically is a no no. Is it?

Why? The thread is discussing (what discussion there is) why he is banned and if he deserves to be banned. This is why I think it is justified. Kinda odd that the stylings of Last Stand and company are okay with you but that discussing what rules he broke that justified his banning is not.

I won’t be missing TVAA, not one little bit; however, it does seem that the holidays make a lot of people a little crazy. I saw parts of that trainwreck & just kept thinking the participants must’ve spent waaay too much time at the mall in a futile search for Tickle-Me-Whoever.

I won’t be missing him either.

I’m obviously not a Mod but it seems to me that only accusing active posters of trollery is verboten. I don’t recall anyone being warned for making such accusations after the fact.

As the main opponent in that thread, I thought he was being quite sincere - if he was trolling, he was doing a very good job of pretending.

However, if you are right, I agree - I wouldn’t, if it was up to me, ban him for being an anti-semite; I would ban him for trolling.

I, too, consider TVAA a friend, and always tried to be a friend to him. I’ll miss him terribly.

And…alas…this isn’t a bit surprising to me. He always seemed to delight in his acerbity. Such rhetoric may be fun…but it serves no other purpose, and I like to think that this board exists for a real purpose: namely, reducing the amount of ignorance in the world.

Trinopus

If that’s the case, then everyone who participated in this thread should be banned as well.

Okay, check that. Not everyone who participated that thread, but there were quite a few accusations of trolling sent in the direction of a banned member.

In the service of reducing my ignorance, why is an accusation of trolling more verboten (against active mebers) than accusation of being a dipshit or a fuckwit or a jerk? I would think that it is an accusation that should not be made lightly for it is hard to ascertain someone else’s motives, but why verboten?

TVAA was not banned for a single offence. His was continued assholery after being warned. A Deathy By A Thousand Cuts, if you will.

IMHO

It just dawned on me that there are dozens of, um, assertions for which I will never be able to read any support. And I was so expecting them to be forthcoming. Now this is a blow in the fight against ignorance.

Of course, I suspect that rather than being prohibited from tying up so many loose threads, I have actually been spared a whole yarn ball of new ones.

“It’s a fine line between stupid and clever.” – Spinal Tap

TVAA may have crossed that line.

Thank God the rule is “don’t be a jerk”, not “don’t be an idiot”, or I wouldn’t have lasted a month on the boards.

Although I have seen people get banned for posting persistently wrong answers in GQ.

I kinda liked TPFKATVAA (if only 'cause he kept the conversation lively) but that was the most heavy-handed and unsympathetically jackboot-stomping-on-face way to make his “point”.

Tara, you dumb fuck.
