[Semi-related hijack] The character was based on a real reporter for one of the LA TV stations. In the late 80s/early 90s someone shot and wounded him as he was leaving the TV studio. While he was laying there in the parking lot, awaiting for the ambulance to arrive, he kept asking people how his hair looked. [/SRH]
