Twitter etiquette question

Note… if you don’t like Twitter, think it’s stupid, etc… this is not the thread for you.

So I started a (very!) minor controversy on a local talk radio show about 30 minutes ago. The talk radio host was conducting an interview with somebody who said (paraphrased)

“I tweeted Manu Ginobili asking him to stay, saying ‘one more, mi amigo’, and I ask all Spurs fans to do the same…”

To which I tweeted the host

“Great interview, but I REALLY don’t think people should twitter-bomb Manu’s account.”

He was surprised that people would have that opinion as, in his opinion, Manu probably gets hundreds of tweets a day. So he threw the discussion out to the listeners (mentioning my name in the process - I’m now famous!), to which I’ve heard very little since then.

So… what do you think: Is asking thousands of people to send the same message to somebody OK, or a breech of Twitter etiquette? Does it matter if they are a celebrity?

I don’t use it much, but I remember John Oliver telling people to tweet specific people before. Though he just said to use a specific hashtag for them, not to post the exact same message. And his was about making a difference, not just some novelty.

I think it might be more appropriate to retweet and favorite his request. And, if he wants to start a trend, invent a hashtag and tweet the guy about it.
