I really hope this is ironic humor.

Juicy.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

Again, stop the bickering with other posters. If you have an issue with them, take it to the Pit. This goes for everyone.

My joke wasn’t funny but it was one I could think of in ten words or less. I apologize if it actually offended anyone. I’ve withheld Jew jokes in other threads (the Kosher tampon one was just begging, but I didn’t) and I understand that me being Jewish doesn’t give me free reign. I did think that joke threads had a bit more laxity. My favorite joke is the peanuts one because it’s so stupid, but it was taken.

<shrug>

Not sure why it’s OK to rip on black people but not Jews…especially if Enginerd did it twice, albeit a bit lightly.

The way I understand it is:

Going by Tubadivas post (#9) jokes against minorities are not Ok. And by what Colibri said, in post 15, minority jokes are tolerated in threads specifically intended as “crude jokes” threads.

I’m sorry, but I have the same question. I’ll have to search, but I believe I recall reading stereotype-referencing jokes about Hispanics and blacks on this board for which there were no admonishments meted.

I’ll be back.

Not to get into parsing every joke, but I don’t see any “ripping” of black people in general in either joke.

The difference: one involves a reference to two specific, named musicians having brown skin – objective fact. The other involves negative stereotypes about an entire group of people.

I have no doubt whatsoever that you can find some, but that doesn’t mean much with regard to the general issue. They may not have been reported; or the mod might have decided they weren’t offensive enough to remark on. Finding instances in which particular offensive jokes might not have received moderator attention in no way indicates that such jokes are generally OK.

This.

Great call, well handled.

Bullshit. Neither of my jokes played on negative stereotypes about black people. Your joke directly references a negative stereotype about Jewish people. They’re not even close to equivalent.

er, yeah. Thanks, Fenris and twickster.

So what about the Catholic nun joke?

No nun attendant.

To be clear, it’s a tongue-in-cheek (ha) question as I certainly don’t think it deserved a note, too. But, it does poke fun at the basis for a large religious belief system i.e., celibate priests. I mean, if you can distinguish that as just a joke, and c’mon it’s harmless, why not the Jewish joke?

I suppose I’m being a bit of a pedantic devil’s advocate…

Do you mean this one?

If so, I see that as the equivalent of this (that also mentions Jews, but hasn’t drawn any complaints):

Both of those jokes refer to particular facets of people’s beliefs (not eating meat during Lent; a quorum of Jews required for some observances) and rely on a bit of wordplay, but neither one makes explicit reference to a negative connotation of the beliefs. There’s a huge difference between those two jokes and one that relies on a widely known, negative stereotype.

Don’t you think that’s a little insensitive when we’re discussing religious jokes?

Since when is being cheap an official part of the Jewish religious faith? :dubious:

I can’t really get fired up about this particular instance but I am uneasy about moderating the Mods opinion of good taste.
