Twixter's Note

I understand that the subject matter belongs in another forum. Thanks for pointing that out.

Please note that I did not offer therapeutic advice except to see a physician. Nor did I recommend a prescription. I told only what had been helpful to me.

For some here, I am not just an anonymous poster. And I have passed on what I have learned about the illness of depression (in general) over the last fifty years of having the disease . For eleven years I have shared that information here as one of my main reasons for participating. As a teacher, it is one of the things I have to offer.

Sometimes you really have an unpleasant and insulting way of making a reasonable point. To me, you are a prime example “that there is no guarantee that anonymous posters on a message board may or may not be reliable sources of information.”

Again, I realize that the subject matter of depression belongs in the original thread or a new one.

It’s a general statement about advice on message boards, Zoe. And as you say, it was a reasonable point. Don’t take it personally.

How do you not take a mod note personally when it’s directed at you?

I got called away for a few minutes, but to finish what I was saying. Zoe mentioned a prescription drug, deltasigma mentioned something about that same drug and then twix made the above statement and closed the thread. That’s not a ‘general statement’, it was directed at Zoe to let her know that she can’t talk about prescription drugs in ATMB.

Having said that, I very much agree with her when she said

But in this case I thought the point she made was reasonable, well made and totally correct. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it.
As far as the thread being closed, I’m not sure, that’s a mod call as to whether she wanted to close it or try to nudge it back on topic. I’ve never ventured into the depression thread, but it seemed like it was drifting that way, which is natural, but out of the scope of the original topic and certainly not correct for the forum.

It was a general statement about a hypothetical new thread in which medical advice might be dispensed in IMHO, which would be the appropriate venue… with the caveat that whoever participates in that thread might not know what they’re talking about.

This kind of feels like arguing about the answer to an SAT question. What was the purpose of the author’s reference to “anonymous posters on a message board?”

I wasn’t checking names on who had recommended what – just responding to the fact that recommending specific prescriptions was not appropriate for an ATMB thread. Such threads go in IMHO, so I suggested starting a thread there – and made the fairly standard reminder that there’s a difference between getting medical advice from a trained medical professional who is familiar with the specifics of your situation rather than from an anonymous poster on the Internet.

So, no, Zoe, you shouldn’t take the note personally. I wasn’t paying attention to the names of the specific posters because they weren’t individually in trouble/being admonished – I just wanted to cut off a conversation that shouldn’t be happening in that thread.
