Overall, love Firefox, but there’s two features of 1.0 that I despise.
I can live with (but don’t particularly like) the new “Find” bar at the bottom. I’d rather have the old-style pop-up. But I can live with that. What I can’t live with is the really obnoxious “beep” sound it makes if it can’t find what you’re searching for. I’ve looked in the control panel under “Sounds” and there’s nothing there. There has to be a way to turn the fucking noises off.
There’s an idiotic “white-list” feature for downloads which doesn’t seem to allow wildcards, so if I go to a site with a bunch of downloads (http://extensions.mozdev.org for instance) where the downloads are all on different urls, (x.mozdev.org, y.mozdev.org) I have to enable each of them which leads to a gigantic white-list filled with pages I only wanted once. It’s a pain in the ass and frankly, I’m a grown-up, I don’t need a damned net-nanny. If I click on a link, download the damned program. Can this be turned off or lobotomized or something?
Hit “Ctrl=F” and the Find Bar appears at the bottom of the page rather than being the friendly pop-up. Then if you type in something not in the page, you’ll get a really obnoxious “beep” sound.
No, that’s the problem–it’s set up to require you to whitelist anything you download from each page.
You type about:config in the url window and then look for accessibility.typeahead.enablesound
and then change it to “false”.
And everyone at the Firefox feedback forum (Feedback: find toolbar • mozillaZine Forums) seems to loathe the find bar too (it’s been submitted as an official bug a number of times! ) so it’s just a matter of time, I’m guessing.
But any help on the other issue would be appreciated.
Until recently I was still using the full-on Mozilla package. It allowed me to bookmark a set of tabs with a single entry on my bookmark list. Firefox now groups the set of tabs into a “bookmark folder” where you see the pages that made up the tab and an entry that opens all the pages together. This leads to extra mouse clicks and extra bookmarks I don’t really want…I just want the one bookmark that opens up the tabbed view.
Is there anyway to do what I used to do with Mozilla with Firefox? This was an unpleasant surprise to me when I moved from the one to the other…
