On March 25, 2013, the City of Toronto will acquire a new area code, 437, to go with the two it already has (416 and 647). Likewise, the immediately-surrounding regions will acquire the area code 365 to go with their existing codes, 905 and 289.
The GTA has got to be one of the most heavily overdeveloped areas in North America. I would have loved to have seen it back in the '60s (or earlier), before it became saturated with people.
Back in the early fifties, Toronto bore a startling resemblance to Buffalo. It was only about 30% bigger, and both cities’ downtowns had similar skylines.
Will Barrie/ Penetanguishene be in a new area code? It seems incredible that my father in law in Northern Ontario shares the same area code as the folks there near Barrie. Then again, Northern Ontario is a big empty place. (See, for example the heavily populated* corridor between Hearst and Longlac.)
*Not populated at all. If memory serves along the highway there are two seasonal fishing resorts. No gas stations no stores no restaurants at all for 300kms.
