Two people found dead at Rob Reiner's home. (Sadly confirmed it was Rob and his wife.)

Yes, several news outlets confirm their son is the suspect and was taken into custody.

Reporting from KTLA 5 in Los Angeles

Other news outlets such as the NYT are holding back on naming the victims and don’t mention a suspect.

So some reports are that son Nick is the killer or has been taken into custody but now I’m seeing this in the Los Angeles Times:

Officers spoke to a young man inside of the sealed off area, who left the scene around 7:30 p.m. in a white Tesla and declined to speak to the media.

If this was their son and the police thought he did it certainly they wouldn’t have let him leave the scene. There will apparently be a briefing/news conference shortly.

It looks like a lot of potentially conflicting information is out there at this point.

FWIW

It’s possible they went to the Reiners’ house on a welfare check out of concern they couldn’t contact them.

Ongoing press briefing by the LAPD, Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton is not confirming identities of the victims and is stating no one has been detained and they do not currently have a person of interest. He has also suggested they have not yet begun a crime scene investigation at the home because they have not been granted access.

“We have to obtain a search warrant for the residence.”

“This is currently a death investigation.”

Asked about the identities of the victims - “The Los Angeles County Coroner will identify the decedents inside the residence.”

When asked if it was a homicide investigation - “Until we get inside and we make a determination we can’t call it anything.”

This is weird.

He just said the coroner isn’t on scene. And he won’t give an ETA on the coroner.

Even more weird.

It’s Brentwood. You can’t just have Mark Fuhrman jump the wall to see what’s what.

I understand, I lived through the OJ trial.

But that was still a weird, uninformative press briefing. The Mayor, Variety and multiple media outlets like KTLA, The LA Times and now the NYT say Reiner and his wife are dead in their home. Victims of stabbing no less.
But LAPD won’t say it.

AND the coroner isn’t even on scene yet, hours after the first call to police.

Like I said already, this is weird.

My brother bumped into him at the Staples Center and asked him to pose as the 6-fingered man. His response:

Rest in Peace Rob Reiner.

Here is an inline version.

Better. Thanks @Atamasama . That was a few years back.

Media outlets can speculate, guess, or report on unverified claims without serious legal repercussions.

If the LAPD does it that can screw up prosecuting during a criminal trial. So they should be a LOT more careful what they say, and be absolutely certain of what they say before they say it.

If the victims are definitely dead (I won’t speculate on how one might determine that) then it’s not a huge hurry for the coroner to get there. Sealing off a crime scene and careful collection of evidence is important, and that takes time.

We crossed paths in October 1988. I was there as a freshman at the University of Chicago; he was there to film the first scene of When Harry Met Sally.

What a life, but what a bummer of an ending. :frowning:

Condolences from Governor Newsom: Governor, First Partner statement on the death of Rob Reiner, Michele Singer Reiner | Governor of California

Chilling and tragic. Coincidentally, I had just purchased tickets to see Stand By Me on the big screen in March at our local civic auditorium, followed by remembrances, a panel, and questions with three surviving cast members (O’Connell, Wheaton, and Feldman). I’m pretty sure the event will have a much different tone now.

Wow, undoubtedly. Perhaps you can give us a summary after the event.

I’ll try to. In the past, the child actors have seemed to have pretty positive memories of working with Rob. I’m sure it will change the tone of their talk completely.

My wife and I watch SBM every year or two, as well as The Princess Bride. I may have to get TPB out tonight and have a bottle of Scotch ready.

I think in general, Rob Reiner was(!) pretty laid back and easy to work with. He definitely declined in quality in terms of a director after the 80s and 90s, but people wanted to work with him.

I am surprised to learn he was 78. I thought he was younger. He had a very youthful vibe even in recent times.

Very small comfort that Carl per-deceased him. Carl was 98 and only died 5 years ago.

The NYT is confirming the deaths and calling it a “suspected homicide”, but nothing more. What a shock to wake up to this morning.

TMZ - perhaps not the most reliable source - weighs in with a grim headline: Throats Slit By Family Member

Not to be sappy, but watch this Princess Bride At Home scene with Rob and Carl. I want to give both of them a big hug.

Rob and Nick discussed their difficult relationship. There’s no indication that it could get this violent.
