I think it would be neat to have a tower defense game where a second player takes the part of the computer. They would get to choose which units to put into a wave, from a certain budget. Every one they get through to the target nets extra cash. The goal would be to choose the units that have the best chance of getting through whatever defenses the first player has set up.
Does anyone know if something like this exists? If not, somebody should totally create it.
Starland Multiplayer TD is closest that I know of. However, Starland’s more of a side-by-side competition (i.e. both players are building towers, but you can send extra enemies at your opponent) rather than a versus where one player exclusively controls the enemies.
In Warcraft 3 (not sure if Starcraft had them) there are usually called Tower Wars. The player who sends creeps get gold for each creep he sends but of course more creeps to kill means more gold for the defender to build towers. Usually you both can send creeps to the next player while building towers to defend against creep send by another player, up to ~10 players FFA or teams etc.
For example see, WC3 TD maps.
If you don’t have WC3, Starcraft II is almost garantueed to have all kinds of Tower Defense - the beta map editor was just released andthe first TD maps have been spotted :). So if you really like TD games SC2 might not be a bad investment (release in July) as the map editor makes in more a games platform besides just an Real Time Strategy game.
I don’t think I’ve seen any multiple player Flash/web browser TD games but I haven’t really looked for them.
Toy Soldiers is an Xbox Live Arcade game that features a multi-player mode where each player both defends their toy box from the enemy and sends out their own attacking waves. It also allows the player to take over any of their units in first person mode. Flying a WWI plane over the battlefield is pretty cool, particularly as it’s all set in a kid’s bedroom.
