Okay, I will admit it, Martha Stewart I’m not. However, I am purchasing a new set of flatware, and one of the options is whether or not the set includes “Mocha Spoons”. What the heck are Mocha spoons?
It seems that a mocha spoon is either a) a chocolate spoon or b) a regular spoon, where the business end of the spoon has been dipped in chocolate. These are good spoons if you are serving coffee and your guests want something a little tastier than Folger’s brew. Not that they eat the spoons. They use them to stir their coffee, and the spoon sheds the chocolate and transforms it into a mocha.
I know you didn’t ask for any other types of spoons, but your title for the post was “types of spoons,” so I’ll write down the interesting spoons I know. Maybe someone wants to make the Official Straight Dope Spoon Inventory?
Here. I’ll start.

Mocha spoon.

Runcible spoon. This is a kind of spoon that was made up by Edward Lear, so that the Owl and the Pussycat could have something with which to eat their slices of quince that could fit into an anapestic meter.

"Spoon" as an insult. This one-ups the old “Not the sharpest knife in the drawer” bit. Not only is the person not the sharpest knife, they are so dumb that they aren’t even a knife - they are a dull spoon, only fit for eating yogurt and oatmeal. We have taken one of our cats Spoon, after she was frightened by a glass of Sprite and fell off the counter. Not to say that she isn’t a great cat - just not a smart cat.
So - who else knows some good spoons?
Spoonerism - to reverse some initial letters in a phrase and thereby cause hilarity. Named after some bloke.
I would guess that it’s another name for a coffee spoon, which is slightly smaller than a teaspoon. Or it could be a demitasse spoon, which is smaller yet. See here.
We cannot forget The Tick’s battle cry:
SPOOOOOOON!!!
Thanx, I guess… I’ll just chalk it up as one of those Martha Stewart words…
Well, there’s me. But I don’t take it as an insult.
As for good spoons other than me (ahem), does anybody remember soda spoons? Great long handles on a teaspoon-sized bowl. You used them in ice-cream sodas, so you could get all the goop out of the bottom of the glass.
Been a long while since I’ve seen one. Heck, it’s been a long while since I’ve seen an ice-cream soda. But if you have an ice-cream soda, then a soda spoon is a good spoon to have.

These goons also spell it “expresso” though, so perhaps a grain of salt is warranted.
What do you call that big serving spoon with the holes in it?
There’s a salt spoon, which to my eye looks more like Barbie’s serving spoon, but is, apparently, no joke.
Soda spoons are sometimes also called “iced tea spoons” or similar names. They are still around but definitely not common.
The serving spoon with the holes in it is called a slotted spoon or slotted serving spoon.
