Heh, this thread made me realize I have an aversion to all things salad.
Have not and will not eat:
Potato salad
fruit salad
egg salad
chicken salad

Ham. I do have an excuse, I suppose - although my family doesn’t keep kosher, there were no passed-down recipes with ham in them, and we never ate pork products in the house (except, vanishingly rarely, bacon). I’ll eat sausage and bacon because I like the taste, but they both still turn my stomach a bit. I’m pretty sure ham would just make me sick because I’m so unused to it.
I worked at McDonald’s for mumble years and never tried a Big Mac. I mean, have you seen those things?
Not me, but a coworker told me yesterday she’s never had grapefruit. Her mother eats it, but salts it instead of using Splenda/sugar.
I’ve never had a Twinkie.
I honestly can’t think of anything ordinary or even fairly unusual that I haven’t tried.
My poor husband, however, has never eaten anything but ordinary beef, pork, and chicken, very mundane vegetables, and spuds. I cook us these routine, 20-minute meals daily, consisting typically of a piece of lean meat, a potato or a bit of pasta, and some type of veggie. One day I cooked a bag of frozen, slized zucchini to include in our meal and handed him his plate.
He looked at it like it was from outer space and said, “What are these hot pickles doing on my plate?”
Uhh…just sitting there, I guess.
I have a somewhat flexible rule about this. Anything that was “something” and is now “something salad” is a salad I’m not going to eat. I don’t like mayo. I’ve eaten it accidentally, and it’s disgusting. And pretty much all “something salads” are just mayonnaise delivery systems.
Oddly enough, I like most mayo-based salad dressings.
So in response to the OP, I haven’t and never will eat any sort of canned tuna, tuna salad or egg salad.
Me too! I can honestly say I’ve never had a Buffalo Wing. Nor do I want to try them.
Never tried coffee. I’ve accidently sampled coffee flavored ice cream and candies but never intentionally.
The smell of coffee is just really unappealing to me.
I was going to say the very same thing. Wings? Really? You couldn’t find a portion of the chicken with less meat on it? How about hot beaks?
I’m on top of the food chain and there aren’t a whole lot of things that I’m not willing to try.
But like Audrey, I’m in no rush to taste raw oyster, either.
QFT!
I will eat fruits, vegetables, seeds, flesh, and even fungi. But I draw the line at glandular excretions!
ETA: Unless of course, they’ve been properly eaten, digested and pooped out by microorganisms, then shredded and melted on a pizza. . . Just sayin’
Just remembered another one. I have never tried Chefboyrdee products. No raviolis, no beefaroni, no pizzarolli.
I think this is a direct result of my obviously deprived childhood. These types of foods were just not part of the foods that my mother chose to feed us, and thus they were never part of my diet.
I have no idea if I would like them. Some people in this thread haven’t tried things because the thought of it is upsetting. But for me it was opportunity or lack thereof. I pretty much will try anything if it is presented to me–but these particular foods were never presented as choices as a child, and they don’t strike me as adult food items in particular.
And now at age 50 it just doesn’t seem like it is something I ‘need’ to try. I believe I can go to my grave without trying Mac-n-cheese or the Chef products.
I know a lot of people who eat Scrapple, but I have just never wanted to eat it.
It’s weird because I love all meat products, especially preserved meat products, but I have just never had Scrapple. I just always want bacon or ham or sausage for breakfast, so I choose that.
I’ve never had a banana split.
I don’t have any particular reason, I like all the components, I have even had many of the components together in various forms, but never had a true honest-to-god banana split.
I only had my first bite of lobster a couple weeks ago. I’ve had plenty of chances to try it (hell, a local group sponsored a lobster supper for my graduating class–I opted for chicken) but the smell of cooked lobster has always been offputting, so I’ve always refused to try it. I’ll probably never have it again either, as I don’t like the texture of shellfish, but at least now I can say I’ve tasted it.
(There is some irony here, as I had my first bite in Nebraska, despite growing up on the east coast)
Man, I can’t believe the things most of you don’t eat… A GLASS OF MILK? CHEESEBURGERS? MAC & CHEESE? BANANA SPLIT? CHICKEN WINGS? Without the above I’d probably starve to death.
As for myself, I have never tried the shredded tuna - that crap that comes in a can usually. Have also never tried mac/egg/potato salad, zucchini, anchovies, sardines, and many others… Basically, my rule of thumb is ‘If it looks weird AND smells weird, I want no part of it’.
I never tried oysters up until last year. I thought of them exactly how I thought of everything else I had no interest in. Though, once I had the opportunity to try one I actually loved them. Normally the “appearance” of a food will be a huge turn off for me, as well as smell, but I had gotten past the appearance of the oysters once I smelled them and realized they smell much like a typical fish and nothing bizarre. Quite a surprise… Boy was I missing out all that time…
There is also another one that I have yet to consider eating. It’s a fish or is related in some way (fish eggs?) and is usually prepared and served in a more upscale environment. It’s something common but I can’t think of the name.
I’ve never tried sushi. I’m not averse to trying it, but I just haven’t done so yet.
I’ve also never had a reuben sandwich, nor corned beef or pastrami or most other deli meats. They look pretty good, but it never occurs to me to order one.
Raw oysters, ditto. I’d probably like them, as I love seafood, but I’m always distracted by some other dish and I never think about ordering them.
I really need to expand my boundaries and try some new things!
I don’t think I had Irish soda bread until yesterday. I don’t know whether that qualifies as “typical” or not. I do remember my prom date, though, looking down at her dessert, turning to me, and asking: “What is this?” “Um, apple pie?” “Oh, I’ve never had that before.” And it’s not like she just moved to the country, or anything. She was as American as, well, apple pie.
Roe?
Unless you want it processed into caviar Either way, I’m not keen, and not through squeamishness (I’ll eat anything!) but because I just don’t like the taste.
