Typo Domain Names

I hate people who do this… register typos of real domains.

I typed in “[URL removed - Coldfire]” by mistake and it took me to a porn site.

http://www.angelfire.com pisses me off too

[Link removed - Coldfire] that is

no, you were right the first time.

Beware: Pop-Ups! (Non-Porn, though)

I clicked that, stupid me, and yes I got porn.

When I used to use http://www.hotbot.com i would regularly screw up the typings of it. Ive been to http://www.hothot.com and [Link removed - Coldfire] All of which were bad then (and although I didnt check both of them I’d assume they still are, I got a lot of popups on hothot).

WARNING: DON’T CLICK THE LINK IF PORN IS A PROBLEM - THERE MAY BE POP-UPS AND/OR IMAGES!!

I was trying to go to http://www.thesimsresource.com the other day, but I missed an “s”. I didn’t hang around [Link removed - Coldfire] long, but I was there long enough to see that the page title was something about uncensored hardcore cartoon porn.

Real appropriate stuff, considering that I suspect a large portion of vistors to TSR would be young teens or children. The Sims is a computer game, and the original has a G rating even though some of the expansion packs are rated 15+.

A more sinister use of this is to run a mailserver at a “typo domain” with wildcards allowed, so that ANY mail sent to that any.damn.username.you.use@domain.com goes to one account. Shady folk troll for sensitive information, credit card numbers, etc.

ARE YOU PEOPLE FUCKING NUTS??

How fucking DENSE do you have to be to post links to porn sites at the Straight Dope Message Board?

And NO, posting a caveat or a warning doesn’t matter one fucking bit. Conveniently leaving off the “http:\” part so the text doesn’t show up as a hyperlink doesn’t matter either, OpalCat.

If you wanna debate the evils of registering typo domain names as porn sites, fine. But if anyone one of you has the fucking nerve to ever post (or practically post, Opal) a link to a porn site on the SDMB, you’re out the fucking door.

I hope I make myself clear.
Sometimes I just can’t believe the stupidity of some people here.

sigh

Actually, Cold, I didn’t see the problem with it. I won’t do it again, but I honestly didn’t see it as a big issue, especially given that it was a) not a link and b) a typo of a common non-porn website (www.livejournal.com) that many people here go to… I mean, if I was posting a url that was like extrahotcumslutsonfire.com or something… yeah… but given what the thread was about, the fact that it wasn’t a link, etc etc… well let’s just say that I think that being called ‘fucking dense’ and ‘stupid’ etc over this is way over the top.

[ul][]Whether or not the link is clickable is irrelevant to me.[]The domain name of the porn site at hand is also irrelevant to me.[/ul]Re-read the registration agreement, if you have to. Then tell me what’s over the top.

I didn’t say that I thought the rule you were enforcing was over the top, I said that I thought being called names over it was over the top.

And when I registered (the day this board went live) I doubt the agreement was the same as it is now.

Just what does this have to do with anything Coldfire said? Yeah, you’ve been around a long time. BFD. Of all people here, YOU should know what is and what is not appropriate.

Back to the OP, I miss-typed dictionary.com yesterday and, sure enough, porn-site. I’m at work, dammit, I get huge “You have accessed a site that is prohibited…” messages and the IT guys start checking in when that sort of shit happens.

The same thing happened with altavista or something a few years ago and I had to demonstrate what happened to keep from losing my web-access.

Bastards.

I just accidentally went to http://www.goggle.com instead of google. I thought google had finally sold out. Scary idea.

Well he said to “re-read” the agreement, and my point was that the agreement as it is now is something I’d never read before (hense impossible to re-read it)

And as I said, at the time I posted it, I really did not think that it was inappropriate (if I did, I wouldn’t have posted it)

OpalCat

Ignorance is certainly no excuse in these forums.

I agree that Coldfire could have come in a little more instructing and less directing (as he is wont to do).

What a great point! Too bad some people fail to do the responsible thing and read the rules. Especially when there have been threads in ATMB about the rule changes. I seem to remember when the Melin flap was goin on, the rules were changed and Opalcat was all over those threads.

I have to disagree here. It’s been pointed out many, many times all over this board that porn links of ANY kind are forbidden. Since Opalcat has been here since the day this board went live (her words) she had to know that.

It wasn’t a link. In fact I specifically put in the quotes so that it wouldn’t come up as a link.

Again, I honestly thought it was ok when I did it. Now I know it isn’t, and I won’t (and haven’t) do it again. Can we move on now, or is it neccessary to hijack every thread into a personal attack these days?
