I always thought of it as cynical, sure, but the ending always said to me that Christmas is what you make of it. If you want to view it all wide-eyed then it’s that. If you want to be a sour-sack who sees it as all commericalism and lies than that’s how you’ll spend it.
He starts off with childlike wonderment and then slips into teenaged/early adult cynicism. But, at the end, he’s wishing people well for the holidays and saying that, whether you want to view it positively or negatively, you get the Christmas you deserve.
I always liked the song because my parents separated right around Christmas when I was a kid and I spent quite a few holidays nursing the bitterness from it and maintaining a “Christmas sucks” attitude. I think it was really the birth of my son that got me to fully turn around and appreciate the holiday for others rather than worrying about what I could find wrong about it. So if I’m totally wrong on the meaning, I don’t wanna know
