Udo Kier has passed away

Udo Kier - German actor who was equally at home in Euro-arty, Euro-trashy, Hollywooden and Warhol films - has died aged 81.

I remember him best from Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein, two films by Andy Warhol (who was only a producer but still got his name above the title). He perfectly played demented and driven European nutcases, and suffered grizzly scene-stealing deaths as a result.

Over the years he popped up here and there, and did equally well in background, supporting or lead roles. The most recent I saw was Swan Song, a sweet film which he completely stole.

Maybe not the greatest, but one of the people who made movies better than life.

A very distinctive presence in a film. I recommend Shadow of the Vampire, plus the psychology scene from Armageddon.

To know death, Otto, you have to fuck life… in the gall bladder!

He will be missed.

I met him at the Palm Springs film festival one year.
Nice guy.

He was one of the most naturally creepy guys I have ever seen on screen, but in a cool way.

And it just got better with time.

Of all things, I mainly remember him from Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

He was in a lot of random films I’ve seen over the yers, but what always stuck in my head was him in Lars von Trier’s Riget (transl. The Kingdom), which made Twin Peaks look like a Mickey Rooney movie. The man definitely grabbed onto the screen anytime he appeared.
