Sad to see it. I always liked him.
Edit: I got the age wrong, he was 75. Can a Mod correct that for me? Thanks.

“All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain…”
RIP to an amazing actor, and best wishes to his friends and family.
He was in two movies that I enjoyed very much as a kid, although I have to guess that if I went back and watched then now I would probably be laughing to myself about how bad they actually were.
(“Nighthawks” with Sylvester Stallone and “The Hitcher” with Jennifer Jason Leigh)
Still he was a part of my pre-teen and early-teen memories, and his movies will live on.
RIP
Blind Fury was a fun movie in its day. So long, Mr. Hauer.
I’ll never forget his chilling performance in the Hitcher. Also, haven’t seen it since childhood but I remember Nighthawk, which also featured Sly Stallone and Billy Dee Williams (who looked like an older Ray Parker Jr)
He shoved a hand grenade in Gene Simmons’s mouth and blowed him up.
Thanks, Mr. Hauer.
Well, that’s sad. I remember how impressed I was, when I first found out he ad-libbed Batty’s final words.
+1; best ddamned hobo with a shotgun ever.
“F*** the bonus”
Goodbye Mr Hauer, and thank you.
I only saw the two movies of his that I mentioned in my initial post (post #3) so I don’t get the other various references above, but if anyone has good suggestions for other movies of his that are worthwhile, I might be interested in checking them out.
Thanks.
My favorite Rutger Hauer movies is definitely Flesh & Blood. (Also starring Jennifer Jason Leigh)
Second favorite would be Hitcher and/or Lady Hawk.
For campy ‘B’ movies you can’t go wrong with Blind Fury and of course Hobo With a Shotgun!
Perfect casting in Sin City, though he didn’t get much screen time.
I’ll miss him.
I remember a Rutger Hauer and J. J. Leigh about a castle siege during The Black Death. I do not remember the name but it really stuck in my head. RIP, Mr. Hauer and may I never confuse with with Wings Hauser again.
Don’t miss The Salute of the Jugger. Hard to find in the US but worth it IMO.
Flesh+Blood
Might also look for it titled The Blood of Heroes
I love that movie far more than anyone should. But it’s great, good action, good play between characters, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I was stationed overseas when it came out on VHS, we watched it endlessly, and two of the guys in my unit loved imitating the rednecks swearing.
I also watched Turkish Delight around that time but I only caught part of it and I couldn’t tell what was going on. It was dubbed and Rutger Hauer had a Hanna-Barbera-esque cartoon voice. Reading the wiki of the movie, it’s a deeper and more interesting story than I had thought.
He was also good in Buffy, Blood of Heroes, and Deadlock (which is called Wedlock, evidently)
Charismatic actor with a knack for showing up in shitty movies. It seemed for a time - accurate or not - that his presence in a movie was a virtual guarantee of box office failure.
Along with Flesh+Blood, he was top-billed in Soldier of Orange, a story of the WWII Dutch resistance that sustains interest despite its length and unpleasant scenes.
[Moderating]
Fixed title.
Above all he was an intelligent actor and that always came through in his roles however shitty some of the films. But a man’s gotta eat and we only have to look at some Pacino and De Niro movies to realize Hauer had no monopoly on bad films. For me though he’ll always be Roy Batty. Damn, he was good in that! RIP Rutger, you’ll be remembered.
As much as I like Rutger Hauer, my appreciation for Flesh+Blood is directionally proportional to the copious amounts of full frontal nudity exhibited by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Back in those days, a teen fellow had to take nudity (especially celebrity nudity) whenever he could get it. Suffice it to say, this was one VHS that really got wore out.
But I digress…
My favorite Rutger Hauer movie is probably Ladyhawke. I thought it a rousing adventure / “star-crossed lovers” romance. Of course I loved Blade Runner as well. I’ve got the 5-DVD box set, and have watched every minute/second of it.
