UEFA Euro 2016 thread

Wales win against Slovakia, thanks to a supportive referee.

this crap already?

Skrtel isn’t Welsh

Friendlies are utterly meaningless. You didn’t make it. YOU are second tier.

England blows it. Ugh. Just awful. Russia stunk the whole game and one stupid screw up two minutes into stoppage time.

Helped by Russian ‘fans’ in black balaclavas and French ‘fans’ targeting England ‘fans’. I’m always appalled by stupid drunken violence by English fans, but they are not alone, and often not the provocateurs. Let’s have a balanced view.

Agreed with all except the highlighted. I still remember Euro 2000.

UEFA threatening to disqualify England and Russia because of the fighting. Right, they’re going to boot the 2018 World Cup host which is led by a mad dictator and England, one of the world’s most popular football teams.

By all unbiased accounts I’ve seen, the England fans are largely blameless in this case. If anything, it’s the fault of Russian domestic efforts (i.e not catalogueing and confiscating the passports of known hooligans like many European nations do during major tournaments) and atrocious French planning.

Anyone with a lick of sense knows that having England and Russia play each other in Marseille is like waving a blowtorch around in the vicinity of a powderkeg. The OM ultras are very well-known for taking absolutely any opportunity to start shit, and Russian ultras have a reputation even in the hooligan community for not just being run-of-the-mill violent, but actively homicidal.

German and Ukranian fans are having it. German media reporting neo-Nazi goings on.

English fans have spent the last few days making a nuisance of themselves; they are hardly innocent in this even if (as seems) the Russians started it in the stadium.

The fault is with the security forces and politicians. Its a caution (admittedly the days events in Orlando might mask this) over spending all your attention resources against terrorism. The authorities have worried so much about terror, they have forgotten all the other criminals and trouble makers who are attracted to such events. :frowning:

Well,Germany looked shaky in defence, Boetang was magnificent (Messi is across the Atlantic) and saved by my count, at least three goals. Gotze is not a false 9, he is an out and out forward, play him as one, either wide or up front (like with Villa), but he is not Cesc Fabregas type player, use Schurrle if you have to.

Spain were clinical, but could not really finish much.

Italy seem good againts Belgium.

Russia fined €150,000 and threatened with disqualification if there are further incidents. Has a team ever been disqualified in a major tournament such as Euro or World Cup?

Around 2000 people are subject to banning orders, preventing them from travelling to France. Unfortunately that leaves a lot of English supporters who are out there to enjoy a few beers and a bit of banter exposed to proper firms from both Russia and France who are indiscriminate in who they attack.

I don’t think it’s happened at international level (though someone might be able to say otherwise) but all English clubs were banned from European Club competition (so the European Cup as the Champions League was called then, the UEFA Cup - which turned into the Europa League, and the now defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup) after the Heysel Stadium Disaster for about 5 or 6 years in the late 80s. Liverpool were made to serve an additional year’s ban on top of this. So such punishments are not totally unheard of.

Starting Kante and Matuidi while leaving Pogba out of the side is why I’m convinced Didier Deschamps is, in fact, an abject fucking moron. Until Payet took some initiative and started dropping back in build-up play, France was literally just moving the ball around in a U-shape between their back 6 - and after Payet started dropping back, it allowed the Albanians to just isolate Coman and Martial and deny them any space after receiving the ball.

If you’re going to play with two types like Kante and Matuidi (who are both more or less allergic to adventurous passes or carrying the ball up the pitch), you have to start a player like Pogba that will drop back, receive the ball, and then move it up the pitch with his feet. That, or you start Cabaye and either play Griezmann behind the striker or move Matuidi further up the pitch. Their starting lineup simply had zero tactical cohesion.

Pogba should have started instead of Martial. He recognized his mistake 20 minutes in to be fair.

But, the biggest moron at the Euros is Roy Hodgson. He took off Rooney, Englands best player; started Raheem Sterling and did not start or even introduce Vardy when faced with a pair of tiring and old CB’s. Of course, he also thought it was a fine idea to use the lone striker for set pieces kicks. Why the hell did he bring 5 strikers, if he was going to play one up front?

Wonder what genius he will show against Bale and Co tomorrow. Joe Hart in the No 10 role no doubt.

You forgot to mention Kane taking the corner kicks. In what universe does that make sense? Well, maybe if he appeared to be good at it.

Joe Hart playing a goal-keeping role would be a start, the coiffeured tit. Still, Uncle Roy has acted decisively and hooked Sterling off, with Vardy finding the onion bag in short order.

England should probably only need a draw against Slovakia now.
