Wow, never seen anything like that: Modric missing a penalty, but scoring in the very next attack. According to the ZDF commentator, there were 31 seconds between the penalty and the goal.
This is intense. I’d really like to see Modric continue forward.
Italy are taking risks to get an equaliser but looking at the tables I think they would still get through in third place. Concede a second though and I’m not so sure.
Really? With four groups yet to play, and Italy’s goal differential currently negative, it seems perilous .
Unbelievable.
Well that’s definitely put Croatia out…
EDIT: not yet. Slovenia need to lose by more than three goals and other results need to also go Croatia’s way. But almost certainly out.
Austria-Netherlands the most exciting game (and closest) so far? I think so, Austria three times in the lead, 1-0, 2-1 and now 3-2.
ETA: but watch out for Wout Weghorst, I wouldn’t be surprised if he equalizes in the last second.
He has experience with that…
Awww no, Poland really needed the W
Edit: Nvm, they wouldn’t have advanced anyway
Exciting matches but… absolutely highlight why this “some 3rd place finishers go through” format is so bad. Both France and NED were (I think?) already locked into the round of 16 going into the day, so had much less to play for.
Hey, without 3rd goes through Ronaldo doesn’t have his Euro! (Where Portugal only won one game the whole tournament)
We had already stablished that the rule was wrong, you don’t need to add more proof…
Look on the bright side, Frodo: Ronaldo winning the Euro 2016 might have given the impetus for Lionel Messi to try to extend his international career and bag his major tournaments, right?
I think he was going to come back nevertheless, but you never know.
That was unbelievably boring (NED-OST) and really bad.
With 3 teams advancing a mini competition is really dumb.
Now hate-watching ENG-SLO
They definitely use virtual advertising - this Spiegel Online article (German language) discusses one rare example where the algorithm failed and a field player running full tilt into a goal and bouncing from the net (something apparently not anticipated by the algorithm) suddenly vanished into the virtual hoarding.
A screenshot from the video in the article:
That is just what I suspected, very well shown in the German video to which you linked. It is amazing (and a bit scary) what AI can do to manipulate images. It is so convincing!
Seriously.
England often seems to go for the extra “one pass too many”. Sometimes you need to shoot. Spain would not draw Slovenia, and so it gets harder to see England as winning the Euro. They sometimes lack the scoring instinct.
Well. That was boring.
England look absolutely dreadful. But they also have maybe the best defensive record in the competition and find themselves in the opposite half of the draw from Germany, Spain, France, and Portugal.
