I’m actually much less black and white than than my original post. It’s hard to compress all your political views into a 5 minute message, y’know.
I came very close to voting for George W., and yes, the abortion issue and the number of Supreme Court justices who may retire is my big trigger. I don’t agree with all of George W.'s views, but this is the only big one that keeps me from voting for him. For me, the abortion issue is much larger than just abortion - I view reproductive rights as a necessity for women. It’s very difficult to be a productive member of society when you’re at the mercy of any pregnancy that might occur, and I don’t view abstinence as a realistic choice. I don’t want to turn this thread into an abortion debate, so I’ll just stop now.
The problem I have with Gore, on the other hand, is that he gives every indication of being a liar and a cheat. I also don’t agree with his gun policy, and his tax plan does absolutely nothing for me. I used to be strongly Democratic, but it was easier when I was more of a “have-not.” Now that I’m a “have”, I start to question all the big government spending.
PunditLisa: You forget, my SO is a blatent Republican. If I’m drawn to losers, and my list is a list of losers, and he’s on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, isn’t he a winner?
Strainger: I think you and I have a lot of the same views. The Religious Right (who I affectionately call “The Godders”) seem to have a big hold on the Republican Party. And like you, it really doesn’t bother me that any one person is religious. In fact, I’d fight to the death to make it so that any one person could choose his/her religion. But when they stick it in my face, or try to promote legislation forcing their views on others, I become very upset. Religion is a private thing, and should be kept out of the government.
A republican has never been for the poor. Republicans are for the rich and big business. His tax program, as good as it might sound, will only hurt this country after his out of the office. He will say anything to get elected!! But I must admit that in all fairness I don’t like Gore that much either.
Alan Keyes (my dad voted for him in the primary, damnit)
McCain
Bush
Buchanan
Cheney
Brown
Phillips
Hagelin
Bradley
Gore
Lieberman
Nader
The sad thing is that my highest, Keyes, was still only a 43% total. Oh well, I’d be a better republican but I’m for gay rights and against school prayer.
TJW- Poor or rich no matter, I vote Republican because they are for more freedom and for less government. That’s what I’m most interested in atleast. (and I hate tree-huggin hippie crap)
Geez, when did I steal Athena’s password and post this? Ok, I didn’t, but I could have. Personally, I deal with it by avoiding the issue. There are other things to talk about, like what do we want for dinner, what’s on tv, when is he going to clean out the cat box; important things.
Last time I did one of these things, my results were:
Nader - 90% match
Gore - 60% match
Browne - I forget, somewhere in the middle
Buchanan - 1% match
Bush - 0% match
Republicans are not for more freedom they would like you to think thats true. Telling a woman what they can and can’t do with their bodies is like a wrong!!
All I can say is I wish my hubby was an ultra conservitive republican swine. At least then we could have political discussions.
Papapotomus will not register to vote. He honestly just does not care- I’ve tried to explain (speaking slowly using small words) why he should vote but he still doesn’t care. It’s so frustrating…
Okay, maybe it’s better to have no political discussions than to disagree all the time… but at least it would be interesting.
