I’ve known for a long time that the SO and I have pretty different views when it comes to politics. Today, though, we both took the VoteMatch quiz at http://www.issues2000.org/Quiz.htm. My short list:
Harry Browne
John Hagelin
Bill Bradley
Ralph Nader
Gore and Bush were #9 and #10, respectively. I’m going to probably vote for Nader even though he’s not going to win, because I just can’t bring myself to vote for Gore or Bush. I hate 'em both.
His list, which I don’t have all of, lists BUSH as #1, and Nader is LAST. Gore is somewhere in the middle. Obviously, we differ on many points. Some of which bug the shit out of me. Abortion is probably the biggest - I’m almost offended that I’m living with someone who rates himself as “slightly against a women’s right to choose.”
Anyone else out there dealing with a political nutcase (or <gasp> Republican) of a significant other? I love the guy, I really do, but sometimes I just want to hit him!
Yeah, that must be horrible. Living with someone who has different views on some issues than you do. What a nutcase. Your life sounds pretty hard.
Bah. You think you’ve got it bad? My hippie SO refers to me as capitalist pig (it’s a term of endearment.) Stupid liberal, doesn’t understand that Bush is for the poor not Gore. But she voted for Spence Abraham in our school election, so slowly but surely I can take her to the wide world of the conservative… but I’m not getting my hopes up. We just make a point to not talk Religion or Politics
<sigh> I’m having a really hard time with this election. Normally I wouldn’t think of voting for anyone but the big two, but I have pretty major issues with both Bush and Gore this year.
Yeah, Strainger, Doug would like you. In answer to beagledave, he does think I’m a nutcase, especially since I stand to save many, many dollars in taxes if Bush gets his tax cut pushed through. [dramatic filter] But at what cost? The issues I hold dear to my heart would be downtrodden and misrepresented by such a candidate![/dramatic filter]
Gore, on the other hand, seems like a liar and a puppet. Plus, I don’t like the idea of more government, which pretty much is his platform. And I really, really despise Tipper. Ugh.
Goose, I think you got it right. Just don’t discuss politics. Luckily, we have the same religious views (none) so there’s no issue there.
Strainger, that’s a good question. I guess because Nader seems like more of a “real” candidate to me, but even I laugh when I refer to Nader as “real” candidate. Must think about this one…
Okay, okay, I admit I am a Republican. But Mr. Golf takes it to the extreme. If I have to hear "Rush Limbaugh said . . " one more time, I’m going to have to stab him with whatever sharp object might be within reaching distance at the time. Not a Democratic jury in the Country would convict me.
I just pray that Gore doesn’t win because I don’t think I’ll be able to live with “Today, on Rush Limbaugh . . .” much longer.
Athena, I took the quiz and was told that I’m a “Moderate Libertarian Conservative.” Basically, I’m middle-of-the-road. For the most part, I lean to the right regarding economic issues and to the left regarding personal and environmental issues. The funny thing is, Dick Cheney came in at the top of my list and George Bush was second from the bottom. So, if Bush is elected, you may see me attending his speeches sporting a Mohawk and an olive drab jacket. However, I took the other presidential quiz and George Bush came in much closer to the top. Yeah I know, they’re Interent quizzes and there are a lot of other factors to take into account, such as your statements about Al Gore with which I wholeheartedly agree.
If it weren’t for the religious right having so much influence over the Republican platform, I would definitely lean further in that direction. I consider myself part of the religious left (I’m religious but the lifestyles, values, and beliefs of others are none of my damn business).
I tried to take the test you posted, unfortunately the site was either down or no longer valid…sigh. I have already cast my absentee ballot for Gov. Bush. I am an indepedant. I am also a moderate conservative who doesn’t argee with all of the planks of any of the current parties, major or minor.
What I am curious about is your seemingly black and white view of Republicans or those who have decided to vote Republican. Are there more than the one position regarding abortion that trip your trigger? just curious.
If I had to choose a party, I guess it would be Republican, mostly because I have fairly conservative views on most political issues. Rush Limbaugh gives conservatives a bad name.
I don’t know who the hell I’m gonna vote for. I can’t bring myself to vote for Gore, mostly because of my fear of electing any vestige of the Great Embarassment, who is currently in charge. Bush, quite frankly, strikes me as a little loopy. I still don’t understand how he beat McCain, who I would happily have voted for.
Nader scares me. The though of him being Commander-in-Chief of this nation’s armed forces keeps me awake at night. As for the other guys, I’ve never heard of 'em, with the obvious exception of the veep candidates and Keyes, who I only know as “the other guy who ain’t gonna get elected”.
The problem with the US Gov’t is that we have too many politicians and not enough statesmen.
mblackwell, thanks for the help on the URL I am proud to say that I have obtained the official designation of a “moderate libertarian conservative”. My short list:
Bush (already voted)
Keyes
McCain
Phillips

To which I most enthusiastically agree! That is the primary reason I am in favor more of term limits than campaign finance reform since I believe that the former will help regulate the latter.
