My 6 dogs went out and were raising a ruckus, so I went out to see what they were barking at. There, under my back porch, they’d cornered a dog. I put my dogs in the house and the dog came out, totally unscathed and unbowed.
He’s a yellow lab mix, neutered and no collar (of course). My side gate was pushed open a little, but I don’t live in a neighborhood and there are rarely stray dogs out here. I put him outside the fence, both to keep peace with my dogs and for him to find his way home, if there is a home.
He’s in good weight and friendly. My neighbor fosters for a rescue, so tomorrow I’ll check to make sure he hasn’t escaped from her, and see if her rescue will take him. I’ll have him checked for chips, too.
I don’t need another dog, but I just can’t take him to my high kill pound.
Okay, that didn’t even occur to me. He figured out the dog door and spent the night sleeping with my dogs. He might belong to a neighbor, otherwise I have an elderly couple from church who are interested.
I actually found his owners! He lives about 1/2 a mile away. I stopped at their house and asked if one of their yellow dogs was missing. They said…“well, he was just here maybe yesterday or the day before.” I took him back and they had to hold on to him to keep him from chasing my SUV back to my place.
I might ask the old lady from church if she’d like to come to the pound with me and we could pick out a dog. They lost theirs about 6 months ago.
I don’t know. It kinda sounds like this doggy is trying to re-home himself. Give him a week, StG, and if he finds his way to your place again, maybe that couple would still like to meet him! People are so weird.
I’m with the folk who agree it isn’t entirely “great news” that he was reunited with owners who didn’t even care enough to know he was missing. Poor pup would likely have been better off with the old couple.
The people down the road had two yellow dogs. I rang their doorbell yesterday morning on the way to church, but no one answered. Later that afternoon I stopped by again and their 13 year old came out. He didn’t realize one of the dogs was missing, and the mother came out and said, “but he was right here yesterday. I think.” They’re outside dogs, totally unconfined, and we live in the country. But they are neutered and well-fed. No collars, so I can only hope they get their regular vaccinations.
