I picked up a dumped dog today

I found a female yellow lab lab mix. No collar or chip. Very sweet girl. When I stopped my car, she came running to it and tried to climb in. Probably dumped, but hopeful there’s an owner. I’ve posted on the post & found sites. Right now I’ve put food down in my barn, and she’s hanging around, but can’t bring her in due to my 4 dogs.

That’s weird - the pic looks stretched out, she’s much more proportional in the photo on Imgur. What did I do wrong?

I don’t know, but picking up the dog was right!

Poor girl. I remember you saying that was a recurring problem out your way.

You posted the Imgur album link, and the Discourse onebox gets album links wrong.

If you open the album and then open the image itself, that url will be handled correctly.

Nice-looking doggo. I hope she finds home, whatever that turns out to be.

Thanks for the assist!

Do you mean to keep her?

Beautiful dog and, from your description, she seems well behaved. If not are there no-kill shelters near you that you can take her to?

As an aside, I never understand abandoning a dog. If, for some reason, you (general “you”) can no longer take care of the animal (dog, cat, horse, whatever) then it seems the least that should be done is to get the animal to an adoption shelter or some rescue place. I think the animal is owed at least that much.

That’s going to be the question. I’m not in the market for another dog right now, and things are tough with rescues, the economy and prices as they are. I can afford another dog, that’s not a problem. But right now I already have two (spayed) female dogs that don’t really get along. I’m afraid of what throwing another bitch into the mix would do. However, it’s been my experience that dogs fall into my lap when it’s the right time. I guess we’ll see. She may not even be there tomorrow. She’s got a cozy spot in the barn, and food, but the hotwire fencing won’t keep her in.

Yes. This is true.
You get the dog you were meant to get.
With caveats. Sometimes one more dog dumped on your door step can overwhelm. Those of us with big hearts suffer.

I’ve found and took in many dogs. It’s always a territorial fuss at first.
If that doesn’t get too heated move on to housing.
Remember, if they can’t eat, won’t eat, scared to eat in the near vicinity(for ease in feeding later on), anything else will most likely fail, too.
You have 2 that don’t get along, so I’m sure you know what’s what.

I despise people who dump pets.

It’s a very common practice in poor rural areas. Get rid of an animal by pushing it out of a car.

Thank you for your kindness and for doing the right thing!

She’s still hanging around by the gate into the top paddock. The house dogs aren’t terribly upset anymore, not barking at her. I have someone who is showing some interest, “If only she wasn’t so far away”. I volunteer for rescue transport - I can probably get her where she needs do go if it’s more than lip service.

That’s great! Hope it works out for both of you and the dog.

I’d hope the person wanting the dog makes at least some effort to meet you half-way though. Share the bother of the drive. I was willing to drive 32 hours (16 hours each way) for my dog many years ago. We all decided it was better to fly her to me (easier and actually cheaper). Still, I would have done the drive (it was my initial plan).

ETA: The dog was given some doggie-downer drugs by a vet to make her calm for the scary flight. All vet approved.

She looks so sweet. Thank you for picking her up and for finding her a home.

I never thought of it this way. I’m keeping this. Thank you!

This morning she came up from the barn when she heard me out with the dogs. I fed the dogs and then went down to feed the horse and barn cats. She followed me closely. She’d eaten some of the food I put down last night, but not all of it. I gave her some more. She’s good about not chasing livestock, either my horse or the neighbor’s cattle.

Seems like she fits at your place; and seems like she wants to bond with you.

Vet. trip, including check for a chip?

ETA: Whoops, I just saw that your op says she hasn’t got a chip.

Oops. Me too.

Not just rural. I’m in Chicago, and we have a dumped dog we found in an alley (figuratively) glued to a particular garbage can for over 8 hours. No collar. Ended up being no chip. No signs posted anywhere over the next few weeks; nobody looking online. I decided to take him in, and the shelters are overburdened, and we had just lost our dog of about a dozen years in October, so, well, here we are. I follow the local dog Facebook groups and there’s dumps left and right. Left tied to a tree or guardrail or fence. Just left on the side of the highway. Dumped in an alley. All of it. I think in November the local animal care and control had taken in over some 500 dogs, which is high for them (I believe 2024 ended up being around 25% over 2023 numbers).

Well, I let her in my fenced yard. Following and sniffing from my dogs, but no growls or hackles raised. She may be my dog. Valentine.
