Ugly Betty 10-4-07: "Family/Affair"

Best line of the night: “I bet she has a coat made of dalmation fur in that closet!”

So. Is Justin going to try to “go butch” to emulate Santos? Is Wilhelmina going to renege on her deal with Betty now that the wedding is postponed? Will it matter considering what’s happening with Ignacio?

And is Dwayne incredibly HOT or what?!

Am I the only one who finds it odd that Hilda is so damned chipper already? Last week she’s creating a fantasy world where Santos is still alive and this week she’s bubbling over.

I hope Justin doesn’t get all manly but I fear it’s heading that way. How hilarious was it when that bodyguard put Betty in a headlock and it was as if nothing was wrong. It was so, “I get put in a headlock every day” kinda thing. Anyway, I’m still loving the show in all it’s over the top glory.

I thought it was a bit odd, too. I know she’s happy to have Papi home, but Santos did just die.

Justin seemed a bit down which was a change from last week. (Granted, it would’ve given away too much if he’d been sad.) The scene where he goes back to the convenience store where Santos was shot nearly brought a tear to the old eye socket.

I don’t know, I think some time has passed since the shooting. How long did they say Hilda had been holing herself up in her room? Last week’s acceptence of Santos’ death - and this week the process of getting rid of his stuff, and just keeping one item to remember him - seemed like she’s really done a lot of healing. Her happiness about her dad’s return seemed ok to me.

I think it showed a somewhat logical procession. Last week unable to leave her room. The beginning of this ep unable to face going through his things, then going through them but deciding every object was precious. Then 'Nacio’s sermon about how it’s okay to heal, and how you don’t have to keep every little thing Santos touched. It was so sweet that he still had the receipt in his wallet. Finally keeping a momento or two.

I don’t think Justin will become Macho Justin. First, that just isn’t the kid plaing him. Second, Mark (in a rare kind moment) acting as a mentor and showing him it’s okay to be who he is. He may decide that it’s okay to like musicals and basketball, but he told the store clerk that he wasn’t like his dad.

StG

That’s ex basketball player, and ex-husband of Vanessa Williams, Rick Fox. I think he’s kinda creepy looking.

Hmm. I wonder if they were filed for divorce when the scene was filmed.

On some entertainment show they mentioned that Betty White is going to play Wilhelmina’s mother this season.

My favorite moment that I’ve seen so far (haven’t finished watching it) was the “Thank you Marc” for the thunder on the rooftop. (Is it just me or does anyone else think Michael “Marc” Urie is dreamy [the actor, not the character]?)

One of the rare moments that provoked full-on out-loud laughter from me.

I really hope they aren’t going to even attempt a “Justin goes for butch” storyline. It’s so unnecessary in the face of last season’s “Hairspray on a train in a blackout” sequence. Santos knew his son wasn’t macho and he also knew the shit Justin took for it. He was OK with Justin as he is and it seemed like Justin knew it. No need at all to undercut that.

I trust them with that storyline. Last week when Alexis was an amnesiac, there was the fear that she’d wake up wanting to be Alex again. But instead she’d merely forgotten having already gone through the surgery and was happy with the new body.

Glad they got rid of Amanda’s fat suit.

I absolutely loved the way Alexis sat there squeezing her boobs, and then gave Daniel a thumbs up and a big grin. It was so silly, and yet so believable.

It’s strange how this show gets more and more enjoyable as the plotlines wander off into lalaland. Somehow, the silliness of the plots just adds to the charm rather than detracting from it. And just when it seems too altogether ridiculous, there’s a touching scene that brings it back down to earth with a thump.

I truly adore this show!

From wikipedia:

Noooooooooooooo!!! (On the other hand, what gay guy doesn’t have a girlfriend in junior high?)

Justin’s “run” to pick up Marc’s tossed pencil was hysterical, but also relieves any doubt his character is going to turn macho.

Speaking of Marc, the actor Michael “keep ‘em guessin’” Urie says he’s lobbied the producers to have Martin Short appear as his father on an episode. That might be interesting.

I hope that Ignacio’s Mexican adventure will be resolved next episode- maybe the family of his wife’s first husband won’t have a grudge after all or something. I miss him being in the family home and think Mexico’s a distraction (particularly now that Rita Moreno’s on another show and thus not available).

PS- One thing I like about this show is they let Marc have a genuinely sweet and avuncular moment with Justin last night- but then had him be self-congratulatory and vapid about it before it got syrupy.

PS- Does anybody know if Ugly Betty White is available on the net? I haven’t found it on YouTube or on TVLand.

IIRC, Marc has had a couple of sweet/vulnerable moments. I think he’s my favorite character on the show, really. Everyone else goes between me liking them and me hating them (even Betty). Marc is pretty even - he is always very much in it for himself. His moment with Justin was great.

Anyone else totally frustrated with Betty for even thinking of putting Daniel’s interests ahead of her dad’s? Damn Betty, grow a pair!

That did irk me, especially since (as Wilhelmina pointed out) it wasn’t lying but just not telling him something that really wasn’t his business anyway. He already knows that she’s after his dad for power, something Bradford even realizes.

And I think if I were hetero, I would be ALL ABOUT Vanessa Williams. Damn she’s hot.

One thing I like about Marc is they haven’t made him into a total cartoon vapid idiot like Jack on Mad About You. He’s self consumed but he’s also intelligent, clever, and ambitious (though he never can get Betty’s family straight).

Yeah, sometimes I really don’t get Betty’s…uh, obsession with making sure everything is okay in Daniel’s life. Well, if she’s secretly in love with him and they’re heading towards putting them in a relationship as they did in one of the earlier versions, then it makes sense. But as her boss? I would think family would count for so much more, especially considering how big a part of her life her dad is.

There was a cartoonish and idiotic vapid Jack on Mad About You? The vapid Jack I usually think of was the one on Will and Grace. Marc has a lot more depth than that Jack, I must say. (Never watched Mad About You, though.)

:smack: I meant Will & Grace. (I don’t know how or why I made that mistake as I didn’t even watch Mad About You.
I think a romance between Betty and Daniel would be disaster- neither is each other’s type and there’s no sexual chemistry between the two.
