Did they majorly retool Ugly Betty after they sent out the original pilot for previews or something? I usually find myself agreeing with the reviews on that site, but this one just seems so far off!
So, were there major changes? Did the reviewer manage to blow it completely? Salma Hayek shows up as a Mexican soap star in a series of running gags?
Sounds like the pilot to me. In the first few episodes, Salma Hayek did appear in the telenovela that Hilda and Ignacio watch. It just comes across as quite different from the show because it’s so outrageously negative, while most other reviews have been quite positive.
I don’t see much difference between the article’s description and what we’ve been watching.
Salma did appear in some of the tele-novelas earlier in the season. I didn’t recognize her but other Dopers did.
I think the only thing the reviewer got wrong was saying that people wouldn’t like the show. Who knew the writers would do such a great job with it? I sure didn’t.
The critic didn’t say straight laced, she said straight – that they played it [Betty’s unconventional looks and behavior at a high fashion magazine] straight.
I think the critic was looking for realism. It’s like she thought someone at Mode should have insisted on a Betty makeover because it just wouldn’t happen that way in real life. There wouldn’t have been a show.
Hell, we got the appeal of Betty.
I gotta go back to that site and see what the critic said about Jericho (IMHO a real stinker) and Kidnapped (which deserved a new time slot or some promotion by NBC).
