She does seem to have excited quite a lot of comment among the blogging classes, and you can’t be notably good at anything without attracting some attention. She does rather come across like super swot, but I’m sure 90% of the negative comment is not really serious, and the other 10% isn’t worth worrying about.
Me, I’m firmly in the pro-Trimble camp. She’s great. This is what we watch Universtity Challenge for, ultra brainy people who just know everything.

Mary Beard is at least more familiar to the educated gen-pop than most Classicists. She writes for the NY Review of (each other’s) Books, at least.

Re question in the OP, I went through a phase as an undergrad of going on TV quiz shows: Weakest Link (while it was new and exciting), Fifteen-to-One, Discovery Mastermind and the deservedly-panned Shafted. I have fond memories of each. I was on a UC team which didn’t make it past the paper-based qualifying round (not a well-organised selection process. One member of the team knew she was hopeless at quizzes but joined because she had a huge crush on Paxman…)
(Off-topic: The question occurs about whether there would there be enough people to justify an Oxford-based dopefest, on which I would be rather keen).
