UK football, season 2008/09, forecasts

Who woulda thunk it?

City beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison

Posh win, MK Dons lose. Result:

POSH ARE PROMOTED!

Premiership football only a year away! (heh).

I can’t believe that there are no posts yet on the Man U “penalty” that shouldn’t have been. It looked to me like the referee hesitated and was influenced by player appeals.

I think people are just remembering the penalty-that-should-have-been in the FA Cup game against Everton. It’s an oft-repeated phrase that these things balance themselves out over the course of a season. I think it’s a load of bollocks, that’s usually only said by the team that benefits, but it might apply this time.

Cock, piss, Partridge. Time to reprise my favourite ever footballing joke, I think: what are the three English football teams with swearing in their names?

Arsenal, Scunthorpe, and fucking Man United.Haven’t seen the penalty-that-wasn’t (or any highlights), unfortunately. However, if Ferguson describes his own team as “a bit lucky” on that point, I think we can take for granted that it could barely have been less of a penalty if Gomes had not only not fouled Carrick, but had created a bower for him out of woven boot laces and fed him sweetmeats from his gizzard.

Lest I be called a hypocrite, incidentally, it sounds like Benitez with bare-faced (but not -chinned) cheek described Liverpool’s free-kick-that-wasn’t against Hull as a “clear” foul, so he’s obviously playing mind games with Phil “Walking Beef Jerky” Brown. Why he might be doing so is not exactly clear, though, since Hull appear to be on an express train straight back to the Championship. Their only saving grace is that at least four other clubs are too, making it a contest merely of who can arrive fashionably late. And given Phil “I take the rays” Brown’s sartorial nous, who’d bet against him?

Now if only Robinho could have played as he did on Saturday the rest of the season we’d be up there with the ::cough,cough:: big four.

The pass from Elano to Robbie for the first goal was sheer class as was the way he scored.

The cross field pass from Robbie to Ireland which lead to the second goal was pure genius.

Manure may not have been able to beat Everton but City were.

In your face Fergie, you red hootered inbred wankstain.

Oh! and another thing Fergie, don’t ever complain about refs again after getting that penalty which wasn’t.

Nottingham Forest lost to Derby shortly after destroying Man City in the FA Cup… Does that mean…?

Ancient history my good fellow, ancient history

For a City fan, “ancient history” is often anything from last Thursday or earlier. :stuck_out_tongue:

The only thing the penalty in the United/Spurs game highlights is the need for some sort of instant replay.

Webb made the right decision at the time. Fact is, United were going to score at some point. Spurs should have been down to 10 men after 10 minutes given the atrocious tackle by Placios. That’s a career ender.

Untied then scored 4 goals in 20 mins. Say what you want about them but that’s impressive. This may not be the best United team of recent times but they will most likely win the league and are in with a great shot for the CL. That’s some season.

I feel sorry for Messi. He’s probably already come to the grim realisation that he’s gotta spend next season playing for some mid-table team in England that he’d never heard of before a few weeks ago and that probably won’t win anything anyway (not for two or three years anyway).

Bit of a comedown from Barcelona, one of the world’s greatest teams and currently playing in the Champion’s League semi.

Whatever role instant replay may have in football, it will NEVER be used to make decisions on things like fouls/penalties.

Question for everyone: Assume that Hull continue their slide, and manage to get relegated. Between the two, who would you rather see go down, 'Boro or Newcastle? I feel sad at the idea of either slipping out of the top flight, but if I had to pick one to stay up, it would be the Toon.

I’m the opposite, Newcastle going down would shake the bag up more than Boro taking the drop. Like when Leeds went down.

Does the FA ever cancel yellow/red cards when replay evidence makes it clear that there was no foul?

Yes.

As for who goes down: Hull for one. Having started the season like a house on fire they gradually burned out., they are not a premiership team.

Plus, the bollocking that Phil “The Brownie” Taylor gave his players on the pitch at half time when they were getting thrashed 4-0 by Man City, didn’t go down well at all.

The guys he was rollocking are pro footballers not some kids playing in the park and you do not humiliate pro footballers the way he did.

Other teams for the drop I reckon are Boro and WBA

just checked the fictures for this weekend. Liverpool vs Newcastle & Middlesborough vs Man Utd

I would expect them both to lose. The following week, they play each other. That game will be huge, the loser will probably be the one to go.

Yellows pretty much no (they can’t be bothered); reds occasionally, most often when the referee himself says he made a mistake. It’s relatively rare though; a handful per season.

And I’m with Wanderers; I’m fecking sick of the Newcastle comedy show and the endless ludicrous flailing, and I really have a bit of time for Boro, so I’d much rather see Newcastle go down. Plus we’d never hear the end of the Shearer Messiah crap if they stay up. I’d probably never be able to watch MotD again.

OTOH I suppose it’s a bit of theatre outside the top 4, which given the publishing proclivities of the major papers is something of a bonus. But eh, after spending this whole season with it looking like at least one big club is going down, it’s going to be rather an anticlimax if both escape and Hull and Sunderland cop it.

Have to agree with chowder though, it’s hard to see where Hull are getting even another point from. My housemate has barely worn his tiger head hat since the New Year.

Frank Lampard is one recent example.

My thoughts exactly.

However, I fancy both Newcastle and Middlesbrough to take the drop. On the other hand if Hull go down I’ll be happy, simply because I think Phil Brown is a dickhead.
