UK football, season 2008/09, forecasts

:smack:

Well if they manage a sackful of goals against each of their last 2 opps they would.

And Newcastle lose by similar margins

Other than that, They’re doomed Mr Mainwaring, doomed I tell you

I think Hull are the most (but not very) likely to haul themselves to safety but only if Man U get a point against Arsenal. You know Man U will end up putting out a 2nd string side against Hull and they’ll realise it’s their last chance to save themselves.

forget Man U, Hull need only take points from Bolton on Saturday. Given the way we have been playing lately them getting a point, or even more, isn’t that unlikely. They then need Newcastle to tank their last 2 games.

Heheheh, Leeds are doomed to another season in League One.

Apologies to any Leeds fans reading.

Heh.

My son’s a Leeds fan despite being Manchester born and bred.

Could have been worse I suppose, he could have been a rag

I did have a merry old chortle on the phone with him last night, he hung up on me:D

I’m starting to think that our chances of winning the league are not that great.

A deep depression settles over Chowder Manors

Glory, Glory, Man United! And the Reds go marching on!

18-18 vs Pool.

All things considered and provided your team isn’t involved in it, then surely then last few matches of the season when teams are fighting desperately to avoid relegation from the EPL.,must be one of the most exciting sporting scenarios.

You Americans don’t know what you’re missing.

Oh! did that motley crowd win, ho-hum

Utd had it easy this year - never put under any real pressure. Liverpool blew a major, major chance of the title just after Christmas - 7 pts clear and Utd playing v poorly. But they bottled it, Utd consolidated and it was easy for them after that. Feel bad for Benitez - well I don’t, but you know what I mean. The press are now taking the piss out of him with impugnity, he’s become a whipping boy. Headline in today’s Guardian ‘More points don’t make United better than us says Benitez:smiley:

Down at the bottom, I see Mark Viduka is coming into some form for Newcastle. The marriage of awesome natural talent with disgraceful physical conditioning is always an interesting one, and I’ve enjoyed watching him play. He’s a fat layabout with a head shaped like a steak and kidney pie, but he’s got great ability. Reminds me a lot of Duncan Ferguson, and the two of them are arguably the most innately talented ‘big men’ to play football here in recent times, whilst being two of the greatest under-achievers. Ferguson wasn’t lazy as such, and was always well conditioned, but was just too much of a basket case to stay fit. Newcastle lost today but I still reckon they’ll stay up, Hull won’t get anything at OT even if Utd put out the ladies team.

I agree, if only because the game will be played at the KC Stadium.

Next season should be a cracker. Relegation battle looks to be tight but Hull have to feel slightly more confident than Newcastle.

This coming Sunday, May 24th, promises to be a very exciting one so far as teams battling to avoid relegation are concerned.

With The Baggies already down that leaves 4 teams in the dogfight.

Sunderland on 36 points

Are at home to Chelsea and to be honest I can’t see the Black Cats having much success at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle on 34 points

The Magpies are away to Aston Villa. Villa having secured a place in Europe next season may well field a weak side which gives hope to Newcastle…we’ll see

Hull City on 35 points

The days when The Tigers rode high and proud at the top of the EPL are but a dim and distant memory.
The are at home to The Rags and I suspect that having the EPL sewn up and the CL Final just a few days later, Fergie will also field a second string of players.
This makes sound sense as obviously he doesn’t want to risk injury or suspension to any of his key players.
Hull may just sneak this one.

Middlesborough on 32 points

Away to West Ham, should Hull lose and Boro win they’ll swap places provided Boro get a hatfull of goals, Hull go down and Boro stage the great escape.
To be honest I can’t see Boro winning.

All in all avery exciting Sunday, I’ll be glued to the TV

Even if Boro win and both Hull and the barcodes lose, they still need a +5 improvement in goal difference relative to Hull to survive, so I think we can discount them. Of the other three, Newcastle are behind in points, but have the best goal difference which evens things up a lot. If either Sunderland or Hull drop a point, a win against Villa will be enough for them. If Hull lose to Man U, a draw will be enough. Yep, it’s going to be exciting.

Can’t outright write off 'Boro. % goals aint that much. If Hull lose 3 - 0 and Boro win 2 - 0 theres your 5 goals.

But Newcastle would also have to lose, because their GD is vastly superior to Boro’s.

S’ok, they have a lot of practice at losing this season. I am going to be on tenterhooks come Sunday. I really want to wave goodbye to Newcastle, but I don’t think Hull will do anything against Manchester B, so just a draw can keep Newcastle up.

As it stands at the moment.

Sunderland on 36 pts with a -19 goal diff

Hull on 35 pts with a -24 GD

Newcastle on 34 pts with a -18 GD

Midd’boro on 32 pts with a - 28 GD

On the face of it I can’t see Boro overcoming such a gap in GD…unless Hull get beat very heavily and Boro win. Even though I think that Fergie will field a second XI I doubt very much that Hull will score many. They may sneak it by the odd goal but that’s about all

Well, I’ve scoured this thread but I can’t find the post where chowder congratulates United and Sir Alex Ferguson on winning the league. Just let me look again… no, can’t seem to find it. It’s probably my fault, I must be missing it.
