UK Snap Election: 8 June 2017

That’s why we need the military on the streets. It’s an emergency - a load of non-elected ‘Cobra’ people in a room said so.

Your weak patronising tone aside, it should be rather obvious that my contention is that Life, a charity seeking to undermine the rights of women, should have received no money. The distribution of the rest of the money raised is yet another irrelevancy.

I said the NHS was being underfunded, your point is ridiculous.I refer you to the charity The Health Foundation who had this to say on the under investment in NHS England.

With regards to my other points, I stand by them as reasonable summaries of Conservative Party policies and attitudes.

You are, of course, free to vote for whoever you like. But perhaps it’s time for all those shy Tories to admit that what they should be feeling is abject shame.

Who made you dictator? Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean that others don’t have different opinions.

Actually, it isn’t. It’s absolutely true.

Maybe, but I’m not a Tory. Perhaps it’s time for all those arrogant Labour-voters to admit that they’re just bullies?

You win the thread. A perfect Britishism. Bravo Good Sir!

Lord Sugar (of Amstrad and The Apprentice fame) has just slapped down Labour.

Lord Sugar is ordinarily a Labour supporter.

Apologies for digging up a post from so early in the thread but it turns out the Conservatives are running in 7 of the 18 Northern Ireland seats, namely Strangford, North Down, South Belfast, East Belfast, East Derry, East Antrim and Lagan Valley. Wikipedia says they stood in 16 constituencies in 2015 having rebranded themselves as the Northern Ireland Conservatives.

Given that the unionist vote is already split and that changing demographics favour the nationalists, this seems pretty odd.

Probably the only good thing that could come out of Brexit is the end of subservience to ridiculous European human rights laws and, especially, courts. I don’t think it’s worth the cost of leaving, though, so I’ll be voting for the only party actually campaigning on possibly reversing Brexit.

Probably a waste, voting for the Lib Dems, but fuck it. Corbyn is ridiculous, and May is going too far. It’s marginally possible a forced coalition or minority government could restore some sense.

Since the end of their alliance with the Official Unionists, the whole point of the NI Conseratives is to field candidates in elections in Northern Ireland. If they’re not going to do that, they might as well shut up shop altogether.

10 seats to watch according to Politics Home U.K.

I highly doubt Dennis Skinner is going down, however.

Which European human rights laws are ridiculous? I’d read up on the courts before you answer too.

Making self defence far too difficult (article 2 requires that killing someone in self defence may only be legal if it’s absolutely necessary, not just if it’s reasonable).

Making it difficult or impossible to remove foreign criminals if they’ve settled in the country (article 8, right to family life). Or of they own a cat…

Including the right to form trade unions as a basic human right (article 11) shows the fundamental political bias behind it.

Article 16 making it impossible to prevent citizens of other EU countries getting involved in national politics.

And, conversely, the refusal to allow the right of marriage to extend to everybody.

It’s a silly, contradictory document that tries and fails to combine the very different cultures and morals of many nations, and includes as I’ve listed several unacceptable things whilst ignoring a couple of major human rights - such as freedom from discrimination or the right to defend yourself.

As for the court, it’s fundamentally against the concept of a nation for there to be an outside court able to impose rulings on it. The court does not judge in accordance with UK precedent, at least not exclusively, and so should not be involved in UK law.

But as I said previously, whilst this is important, it’s not a reason on its own to leave the EU, but I rather hope that if we do end up leaving we will leave the ECHR and have some form of British human rights legislation appropriate to our country.

It will be the high point if the evening if he does, though. Unless Abbott somehow loses.

You didn’t research the court thing at all, did you?

What’s to research? I’m opposed to the basic principle of it.

I am looking forward to casting my vote. Let the fightback against Brexit begin in earnest. It’s time to restore the soul of a nation. Surrender is not an option.

Who needs facts and legal principles when emotionally driven fantasy works better.

It’s a bright and beautiful morning here. This means an increased turnout, which will be good for Labour over the UK. I’ll be going to vote just as soon as I’ve finished my mug of tea.

Voted.

Voted. And done some shopping. And spoken to the neighbours.

I’ll vote tonight but the spouse reports that the polling station was very busy this morning.

Which in no way refutes the point that the Conservatives have deliberately underfunded the NHS - and schools - in order to facilitate privatisation efforts. It’s not like it’s the first time they’ve tried it, remember. And the last time they did it things got so bad we had an MRSA outbreak.

No, the Tories have long wanted to rip up the HRA to allow them to do things like indefinite detention without charge and gaining access to everyone’s email.

Even if UKIP candidates are stepping aside to allow tactical voting for the Conservatives it’s hardly a “conspiracy”. Labour, the LibDems and the Greens are openly doing this in a few constituencies including Hastings, which may result in the ouster of Amber Rudd.

With scorn and incredulity for their believing a bunch of lies that the Leave campaign immediately disavowed after the referendum and for facilitating a rise in assorted forms of bigotry across the country? Yes, that was terrible. Poor you.

Can’t do that either - the military is at its lowest levels for decades as well.

“Bullies” for insisting that the Conservatives take accountability for their actions and policies? May and the Tories have been deliberately reluctant to share details and costs of their policies ahead of the election, which is understandable when one considers things like the Naylor review. Demanding that they own up to what they plan to do isn’t bullying.
