UK Snap Election: 8 June 2017

As an interested and semi-informed observer from across the pond, I have to say I am pleased with this result. I believe it was a completely politically craven decision by May to reverse herself and call this election after repeatedly saying she was against an early vote. It’s not often in politics that you reap what you sow so clearly.

Yeeah, the majority of Tory MPs voted against the bill at the Third Reading. It only became law as a result of overwhelming opposition party support.

from The Public Whip — Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill — Third Reading - 21 May 2013 at 18:59

Conservative votes in favour of Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill - 117
Conservative votes against Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill - 127

Labour votes in favour of Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill - 194
Labour votes against Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill - 14

None shall pass.

I just started a thread about Sinn Fein abstentionism: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=828196

Has anyone got a link to the DUP manifesto? I can’t seem to get through to www.mydup.com.

You are a bad man!

I’m really not grokking the love-in for Corbyn. Sure he performed better than expected but Labour were still heavily defeated. ISTM that it’s more a case of May making a series of gross errors rather than Corbyn being successful.

The Kensington count has finally finished, and it’s a Labour gain by 20 votes. Kensington.

But is Wales swinging at all?

Well, even up to a month ago it was generally advocated that he was such a disaster for Labour the Tories would nearly wipe them out by an >150 majority. And snivelling little Nu Laborites such as Blair and his minions were staging a comeback in the ashes to destroy socialism forever.
Not a fan, but he’s done massively well against that background and the Tory Greek Chorus that is Big Media.

Are you sure that isn’t because May is a walking disaster area?

I’ve been to a gathering of south London party people - volunteers and elected - and didn’t speak to anyone who thought this Parliament can work. October is fav for the next General Election.

Key issue is under the Good Friday Agreement Westminster has to be an impartial moderator or arbitrator. Even John Major in his darkest days of minority Gov didn’t go knocking on the DUPs door. And now, there isn’t even a devolved Gov at Stormont - that went pear-shaped a couple of months ago.

Just can’t work for anyone, any which way you look at it. If she tries to make this stick she could undo 20 years of work in Northern Ireland. October …

Sounds about right. That will give a new Tory leader enough time to prepare.

Can’t you just kick NI out and wish them good luck?

Well Malaysia did it with Singapore back in 1965.

KENSINGTON??

I just saw that Lord Buckethead got 249 votes this time around!

In a different, much more entertaining world, President Vermin Supreme and Prime Minister Lord Buckethead would sign the Intergalactic Pony Accords while this Buckethead played in the background.

She was better than Cameron.

Cameron had a pact with the Unionists in 2010 — the UUP not the DUP, but no-one outside Ulster can ever tell any of the Unionists apart — Being Cameron he knifed them. After which he met with Vladimir and Barack in Enniskillen to bring about World Peace.

And all the Unionist parties distrusted the Tory’s Anti-Welfare crap. Lot of poor people in that Province. As in Ireland generally.
