I checked Snopes but couldn’t find anything. I’ve been hearing from people for a long time that Asians who have a diet with a lot of rice have medical problems such as stomach ulcers as a result.
My personal reading is that rice is almost a super food, very healthy and nutritional. My wife has announced she is fed up with potatoes and she wishes to eat a lot more rice.
Does anybody know anything about this rumour/UL smearing rice’s reputation?
Most stomach ulcers seem to be bacterial in nature.
Asians do have higher rates of stomach cancers than Americans and lower rates of breast cancer.
However, Asian-Americans born in the US have incidences of those two specific cancers more in line with the general (US) population.
I hadn’t heard about the ulcer thing. What I had heard, was that Asians have a higher rate of stomach cancer. I can’t remember why, exactly, but I think it had something to do with tons of salt and pickled foods. I don’t think rice had anything to do with it.
One rice-related condition is more a problem of absence rather than presence - substituting white (polished) rice in a diet based on brown rice leads to nasty nutritional deficits. White rice is fine in rich diets (only the rich ate it originally anyway), because those diets are varied enough to make up for all the stuff white rice doesn’t have, but brown rice is much more than just starch.
Hey, Al, if you’d really rather stick to potatoes, just have your wife read through the official USDA standards for how many weed seeds, weevils, moths, and other bugs are permitted per shipment. Cool! I love the Internet…
H. pylori is the usual suspect in stomach ulcers now. The good old days of worrying so much that you would get an ulcer seem to be in the past, according to medical literature I’ve read.
