Ultima Collection/Ultima 7 Complete

I just got a renewed Ultima kick and I’d like to get my hands on either the Ultima Collection or Ultima 7 Complete(as this was said to be the best one). My concern is that the Ultima Collection is said to be very difficult to run unless you have a lot of knowledge about comps as the manual isn’t that useful.

I, unfortunatly, do not have that sort of knowledge as I’m among those who seldom use DOS anything.

So, I’m wondering if the Ultima 7 Complete has this same problem. I’m also wondering if bugs(like in Ultima IX) are a problem as well.

I’m just going to go with the one that easiest for me for deal with.
FTR, I’ve played Ultima Exodus/Quest of the Avatar on NES.
And Ultima: The False Prophet on the SNES. I also tried Runes of Virtue, but I don’t think that counts. HEheeh…

Ultima 7 is indeed a pain in the tuckus to get to run (it sort of was back in its own day, too. Came with its own proprietary memory manager. Lordy, I do not miss futzing about with QEMM settings).

However, there is Exult, which runs it just fine. Highly recommended.

Let me second the vote for using Exult to run Ultima 7. Not only does it run the program smoothly, it actually adds features that make it easier to play interface-wise. A whole gaggle of keyboard shortcuts, Serpent Isle-style paperdoll inventory for Black Gate, support for higher screen resolutions, ability to play in a window, etc, etc, etc. It is a very cool app.

Thank you both!

Does Exult work well for the Ultima Complete too? Or is it just for U7?

Nevermind! I got the Collection. Ultima 7 in that version works with Exalt too.

Personally I liked Ultima 6 best. Ultima 7 didn’t do a thing for me and it was running too fast way back on my old Pentium I, 90 MHz.

Boy, truer words were never spoken. That was such a pain in the ass.

And I liked Ultima IV. I played it on an Atari, dude.

IIRC Exult allows you to control the speed of the game. If you’ve still got your copy of U7, you might want to take it out and give it a whirl.
