Isn’t conflating the destruction of the ozone layer with global warming/climate change a bit dated? I’m sure people were confusing those two back in the Eighties.
Smoking has been stigmatized far too much in American society. Why are fat- and salt-saturated lunches served in our public schools, but smokers are social pariahs? It doesn’t make sense. I am a smoker. Yes, I’m aware it’s bad for me. Yes, I enjoy it as much as you’re enjoying your Krispy Kreme.
Islam used to be a religion of progressives. For a time, the Islamic world was a leader in art, engineering, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine (Salah ah-Din was praised by his enemies, the Templars, for his chivalry and strategic genius), but Islam has since become a culture of violence, hatred, misogyny, ignorance, and hypocrisy. Church representatives prey on weak-willed and directionless young people and turn them into mass murderers. Women are treated worse in fundamentalist Islamic countries than goats and mules.
The United States is less than fifty years away from another civil war due to polar opposite political and philosophical views, which was the cause of the first war.
Criticizing Israel does not make you anti-semetic. There are a lot of perfectly valid reasons to be pissed off at the way Israel has behaved for the last few decades.
Reading Foxtrot. Sometimes I think forced diversity causes more problems than it solves. Like-minded people (and I don’t mean Democrats vs. Republicans) prefer to live with each other.
And that is not a bad thing.
Perhaps we’ll see the States be permitted to form smaller countries? Could we possibly do that without the violence, please?
I am glad when bad things happen to people doing stupid things. Even if the things that happen to them are vastly disproportionally worse than the stupid thing they were doing. Went hiking in Iran and got jailed for being a spy? HAH FUCKING HAH, go hike in the fucking park next time.
I definitely believe some people are just too dangerous to live.
If one more person who only speaks Spanish tells me I should speak “a second language,” I am going to scream. My SIL, who works as a translator of Swedish, Norwegian and German into English, gets this too, because she doesn’t speak Spanish.
I’m not anti-smoking and don’t care if people smoke around me personally, but the obvious difference here is that the bad food people eat doesn’t get into the bodies of other people. Smoke does.
Wait, shouldn’t that mean the opposite of what you’re saying? Now that girls outperform boys, the fact that they didn’t in the past was due to sexism (although not necessarily in the classroom) and not inferior female intelligence.
A case can be made that boys’ current underperformance may be due to sexism in the school system. It is possible to go through an entire K-12 education without ever once having a male teacher. That’s gotta count for something.
No, I saying that the classic argument that there was a sexist, male oriented classroom dynamic that oppressed girls ability to participate, and crippled their academic performance was never substatiated by the relatively tiny differences in male/female academic performance over the last 30 years. It was a “just so” story that people could get behind that was largely BS when you looked at the numbers.
THIS. I also dislike it when people call Christopher McCandless a brave guy. His stupidity cost him his life. It wasn’t brave or noble or anything like that.
Why, the white man when they brought it over from Europe!
dhkendall, you know Tanyalee? Awesome! I haven’t seen her for a few years but I’ve met her a few times, though my parents.
It all comes down to “don’t be an asshole.” Terminology is always going to be changing. It’s fair to try to keep up with what has become deeply offensive vs simply a bit out of date, but there’s no point worrying about it much otherwise. I do despise “midget” (which is the invariable abusive term) but I also despise “little people” for entirely different reasons (I am not a small child, I am an adult woman). It’s tricky. All it comes down to is just don’t be an asshole.
My non-PC opinion? I despise the whole “people-first” thing. Hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. As a “person-with” I really detest being told what I’d like to be called. I know I’m a person. I don’t need some sort of wacked affirmation on that point. If you are not me, you do not know what I think or want or need, because I am a person like you. Bite me.
I also think there is a very small subset of humans that the species would be better off without – by this I mean certain criminals. The problem is figuring out exactly who really did it, which is why I am mostly against the death penalty as it is currently used. If there were a way to infallibly know who was guilty of particularly awful crimes, then I would be all for their quiet removal from the human race.
It’s just as possible to go through without ever having afemale teacher. The odds of both are extremely low. Especially in high school, and any instances of it happening would be statistically too low to account for the difference in test scores.
Okay, let me try to break down your bizarro logic:
During our very sexist past, women did not excel academically as often as men. This was held up as evidence of their inferiority, supporting the sexist environment further.
During our more recent past, women still did not excel academically as often as men. This was blamed on pervasive sexism and lack of educational opportunities.
Over the past generation, there have been efforts to put an end to a pervasively sexist environment and give greater opportunities to women. Suddenly, women are performing at the same level as men or even exceeding them.
And so you conclude there was never any sexism in school behind the differences that have now disappeared following efforts to stamp out said sexism?
