So I woke up this morning to find that someone had used my iTunes ID to download the game “Flight Tycoon” and something like $350 worth of in-app purchases for it. :smack:
Since then I have:
- Changed my Apple password
- Contacted PayPal and set up a dispute on all charges.
- Contacted my bank and put in a preemptive Stop Payment for charges coming from PayPal (the PayPal is set up to debit my bank account; fortunately the charges had not been submitted to the bank yet as of when I caught it.)
- Sent Apple customer service an email letting them know that the purchase was unauthorized.
Anything else I need to do to protect myself? The security leak seems to have come only thru apple, I don’t have any notice of any other charges.
Yours in panic,
MtO
you’ve done exactly what I did. paypal ended up refunding me, but at the same time your iTunes store account will be locked. also, to my chagrin, the unauthorized downloads will never go away from your account. I keep getting reminded that I have pending downloads, and it’s crap I don’t want and wish it would just go away.
It couldn’t hurt to run some scans on your computer to make sure your account wasn’t compromised via some sort of malware (especially if you’ve used that computer to make itunes purchases at all recently). Most likely someone just managed to hack your itunes account separately, however.
If you haven’t gotten your free annual credit reports lately, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get at least one of them in a couple of weeks. Again, not likely that someone’s messing with you beyond your itunes account, but there’s no harm in checking.
Oh - just thought of something: when you (the real you, not the Flight Tycoon you ;)) makes a purchase, do you have to put in your Paypal password as well?
apple will refund the purchases if you can supply all of the information they ask for. my apple ID was once stolen to buy 50 dollars of chips for some poker app.
