Having read this entire exercize in re-opening old wounds, I have to wonder. WHY should there be a “petition for re-enstatement” date? The mods decided that certian posters are such a detriment to the boards that they must be restricted from ever posting here again. Why should that view change just because a couple years have passed?
I mean, it isn’t tough to keep in line here. You don’t be a jerk, you get to continue to post. Satan was a jerk, he got banned.
In my opinion, this thread was a really bad idea, Joe. A simple e-mail would have better served the purpose, without all the drama and ill feelings.
I am begining to think that Joe was hoping for the torment that occured with this thread.
I hope that if I ever get banned, (gods forbid), I am able to maintain a little more dignity than I have seen here.
Perhaps because their only defined choices are to ban a poster, or to let him continue posting? So the only way to say to a poster, “we think you could use a year or so off from the boards,” is to ban him, and leave the door ajar for him to apply for reinstatement at a later time (which is in fact what they do)?
Hey, if it works, and the poster in question is truly recalcitrent, then let the poster petition away, as it seems Satan has done. But to set some kind of sentance, like a year, is silly.
Like it or not. Brian is banned. I agree with the mods that his LJ entries should be taken into consideration, and, like it or not, their word is final.
I kinda miss his contributions myself, but, you know what? There are several thousand others in line to take his place. Yes, he brought humor and some fun to the boards, but then so have several others who were also able to FOLLOW THE RULES. They continue to post. He cannot.
So I say Tough Shit. Let him play in some other sandbox.
This horse isn’t even a grease spot on the concrete, having been beaten so much. It is fast becoming an indentation of vaguely horse shaped proportions.
We do have another method, the warnings to a poster to stop being a jerk, and the warning that your next infraction will be your last. Of course in Satan’s case that proved spectacularly ineffective.
Darn submit button! I wasn’t done yet.
In addition, RTFirefly (I guess you haven’t read every post in this thread), to repeat what I said in a previous post, we have on occasion in the past suggested to posters that they take a temporary leave of absence from the board when they are becoming too antagonistic. And Satan himself took a self-imposed sabbatical.
Fenris, many people think the banning and clemency procedure doesn’t meet the standards of fairness and equity established elsewhere on the board. Joe_Cool’s musing on the process is a clear generalization that yes, stems from the dialogue generated about Satan.
Joe_C makes at least this much clear: The moderators are welcome to ignore our input as they see fit – though one would hope the community has welcome input on more than just the best new Smilie.
Suggestion to the moderators; Put out a hit on this thread ( call the Soprano’s if you have too.) Go ahead and drop a dime on this baby. Or drop a nuke or just drop kick it off the boards. Joe has made his point and the mods have made theirs.
