Under 25. Help me rent a car.

Alright, so a friend and I are flying out to California for a concert at the end of April for a week. And we’ve decided that it would probably be a good idea to rent a car while we’re there. However, we’re going to be 22 and 23 years old, so we’re going to face some pretty stiff fees since we’re “underage”. ~$20/day. That’ll add up over the week.

Any dopers have any experience with this sort of thing? Companies they’d recommend, companies they wouldn’t. Just some general advice on renting a car would be useful too.

We really would like to have a car but not if it means we’ll pay more in fees than the actual rental. Or do we just have to swallow the bitter pill and pay the fees, if we need one that badly.

Thanks.

You could get a U-haul van. I had to do it once, when I couldn’t find anybody who’ll rent me a car. (I was under 21)

You still have the option to rent a car?

I’m 21 and I can’t unless my car is in the shop and I go through my car insurance. Believe me, I’ve tried. I don’t even get smacked with extra fees, they just flat won’t let me.

I have found in the past that Enterprise will rent cars to under 25ers. Check them out.

When I was under 25 and traveling for business, I could usually rent a car without the surcharge. I don’t really remember much about the details, but it could be something to look into.

This might not be helpful if you need to get a car at the airport, but you might want to check college campuses. I know on the Stanford campus there’s an Enterprise that rents to anyone over 18 (it might only be for Stanford students, though).
