Enderw24, you misunderstood me (or perhaps I didn’t make it clear), as I said in my post, I like some 80s music, but I do not listen to it exclusively! I know many people who do, and that’s the mentality I was commenting on. Surely to God, there’s been some song that you thought was the coolest tune ever written when you were a teen, and now, years later, you hear it and think, “Dear God, what utter crap! I can’t believe I ever liked that!”
And no, Strom Thurmond isn’t the only one allowed to listen to classical stations. (Are you saying that there’s no one writing orchestral music [commonly referred to as “classical”] today? Wonder what Philip Glass would think of that?) I don’t have a problem with people listening to music from any time period, or style. My problem is with people who only listen to one kind of music! Broaden your horizons, for chrissakes! Not everything was good and perfect about music during the 80s or any other time period. I’ve found that since I’ve gotten older, a lot of stuff I used to like from the 80s sounds trite now. And some stuff from the 80s I never liked! (ABBA in particular!)
I’d better stop now, or I’ll get this thing thrown into the Pit
Star 98.7 has the Friday Night '80s Party…but they never seem to play any of the obscure stuff. I’d like to hear “The Wham Rap” or “Jungle Boy”…or even “Mr. Roboto”. I mean, if you’re going to play '80s, play '80s, knowwhatImean? But it’s a continuous loop of “Sweet Child 'o Mine.”
…Anyone remember a very peculiar song from about 1981 called “Shudup Your Face”? Maybe it’s so obscure it only got radio play in north Jersey, where I was at the time. Nevertheless, I would die laughing if they played it.
Oh God, Rick Dees used to play that song repeatedly on KIIS FM! It was by a guy named Joe Dolce. (Why do I remember stuff like this when I can’t remember what the heck I did last week???) I even remember some of the lyrics:
What’s a mattah you,
Hey, why you looka so sad…
…(forgot some)…it’s-a not so bad,
Ah, shut uppa you face!
Dear God…
Thank you, Viva! Wonder if I could find that on Dr. Demento? Sorry it bothered you, but being from north Jersey, where people really talked like that, we thought it was hilarious.
Sorry to have misled you; it didn’t bother me; I just can’t believe that I still remember things like that.
people here were voting it into the number-one most-requested song, which is one reason why Dees was playing it so much. It was in that position for quite a few weeks, actually.
