Do any of you know what happens to whales, and other oceanic animals, during underwater earthquakes?
They shake.
No, silly, they quake!!
A whole lotta nuthin’.
I don’t know about other types of mamals, but I was scuba diving near the island of Anacapa, off the coast of California when a sizable quake happened nearby.
I was in about eighty feet of water and heard a really loud rumbling groan. I immediately thought the dive boat had started it deisel engines and was either going to reset the anchor, or was about to head for home, leaving me stranded out in the ocean. I quickly decided to go up and see what was happening, while avoiding the area near the boat’s propellers. As I neared the boat, it became clear the the engines had not been started, and the noise was too loud to have been the boat anyway. On board, the captain told us that there were radio reports of a strong earthquake. We resumed our normal activity, and the fish did not seem to care.
