unemployment, whats the freaken hold up?

why 8 t0 10 weeks for unemployment benefits?

my phone should have been shut off last friday (so if i don’t respond again you’ll know why) my electric will be shut off next week.(lucky i have family to help with the electric), and still have 2 to 4 weeks to go.

why the hold up? do they expect me to just peel money off skin till then?

I would guess they expect you to have a certain amount of savings for emergencies like this before going on UI.

Wow, that was snarky. That was not my intent at all.

that sucks…
sorry, i don’t know the answer, just wanted to express my sympathy.

don’t worry Grey, it did not come off as snarky to me. i guess most people do have savings. i used to have savings untill my well went. i deecided not drinking out of a mud puddle, flushing the toilet, and not smelling as bad as what was at the other end of the toilet pipes was worth over $3,000 for a new well.

ah, oh well,
have nice day

Oh, and guess what…

You are taxed on your unemployment.

Talk about kicking someone when they’re down. :frowning:

Why does it take so long? Too many people need service and not enough people to provide it. Bureracracy (sp?).

More likely it’s due to some part of the severance package you recieved. In MA, you are eligible to begin collecting the week you are laid off. And you can file a claim with a phone call.

In some cases, the way the checks are distributed to you as part of severance, or the paperwork you signed (or didn’t), has a lot to do about it… since you didn’t provide any info, I have to assume that this is part of the issue for you. Sucks, but it’s how it is.

You have to be careful. I recently got laid off. I asked my employer for a letter stating that they laid me off and they wouldn’t fight unemployment. Guess what???

That’s right they challenged it. Some companies challenge everyone. I showed the letter on my appeal and they guy was OK you get it. Then I asked what they intended to do about it since this company obviously was pulling a scam. He said it happens all the time and they don’t do anything about it.

My opinion is this company should be fined for holding up monies as well as taking up time from the system.

Wait.
Explain that please.
A company challenged your unemployment?
What the heck does that mean?
How can they do that?

I am thoroughly lost.

Thanks for any response.

Well, it’s possible for you to quit your job, but claim you were laid off when you file. So, of course your former employer is going to challenge it.

In some states, whether you get unemployment depends on the way you became unemployed. If you were laid off, there’s usually no question. If you were fired or quit, your former employer can challange you payments as invalid because it is your fault that you are unemployed.

Why is this check in place? The employer is the one paying into the unemployment insurance system and they don’t want to be taken advantage of. Can they be real hard-asses about it? Certainly.
