So I’ve been doing Atkins for a few months now. I look better, I feel better, blah blah blah. Anyway, this weekend I was painting my nails and noticed something odd. About 3/4 of the way up from my nail bed on one of my nails, the nail was a very light pink. After that, the rest looked dark pink. Then I noticed that it was all of my nails. My nails aren’t coming in lighter, I thought; they’re coming in thicker. The new growth is too thick to allow me to see my flesh through the nail very much. (My hands are quite pink.)
Woo hoo! In a month or so, I’m going to have nice nails. I’ve never had good fingernails, never in my whole life. They’re weak, they split, they break … Now, thanks to my new way of eating, I will have the best fingernails I’ve ever had.
I don’t know enough about the Atkins diet to have an opinion on whether it is healthy for people, but in general, good health is reflected in myriad ways, including strong fingernails and healthy hair. Atkins is the high-protein, low-carb diet, right? It could also be that you’re getting more protein than you used to.
I’m sure that’s a big part of it, LifeOnWry, although my fat consumption has increased much more than my protein consumption, I think. I also think that eliminating trans fatty acids, sugar, and refined flour (as required by the Atkins diet) has helped my overall health tremendously.
That’s interesting, GrizzRich, because in the book (Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution), athlete’s foot is listed as being related to yeast. If you were eating quite a bit of bread before you started Atkins, you may have been suffering from some sort of low-grade yeast infection.
