Overall, I liked it, but some of the movie is bothering me.

Was Diane Lane’s character raped, at first ,by the book guy ?

Why did she cheat ?

Did they just get away with the murder at the end ?

Why did she get obsessed with the book guy ?

What the heck did I just watch ?

  1. I don’t think she was raped. He was forceful/rough and she liked it. You saw her crying/laughing afterwards because of the mix of excitement and guilt she was feeling.
  • Why did she cheat ? *
  1. She cheated because she had a young, good looking, well-read French guy who was interested in here. Gere’s character was portrayed in the beginning as kind of dickish (“Should have bought that stock…know what it is at now? – it’s TOO LATE to buy it now…”) and boring. The lure of excitement…
  • Did they just get away with the murder at the end ? *
  1. I think they (or at least he) turned himself in. They were parked in front of the police station and they were talking about a total fantasy life – how great it would be to move down to Mexico and live off of the sea. They sat through a green light, leading me to believe that this was the prelude to him giving himself up.
  • Why did she get obsessed with the book guy ? *
  1. See # 2. Plus, he was good in the sack.
  • What the heck did I just watch ? *
  1. A decent (but about 30 minutes too long) movie.
